Cut a tree saw curly when splitting. Left a 10' saw log maybe 28 inch diameter. Had it sawed and I see no curly. Is it due to the rough cut? Logs above it very figured when cut. What to do with all this heartwood as well. So how do I Identify curl in the logs I sawed
Rough cut will hide the figure. If you peel the bark, you can see a wavy pattern in the fibers. Hard to explain but you'll understand when you see it.
As far as I've found, with the limited cutting I've done, there's no way to tell until you open them up. The curl can start and stop anywhere it just depends how the tree was grown and stressed. I'm sure someone will chime in more like Shawn Curry. I know he's cut lots more than me.
They give you the right boards? That looks like black cherry. Here's some curly English Walnut I sawed this Spring. The curl ran through the entire tree, but the effect seemed pronounced towards the outside. It could be seen by peeling the bark but otherwise looked like a fairly normal tree. I couldn't discern any reason why it ended up that way from the way it grew. I've also seen it near the stump of some large red maples a few times.
Yeah it's the logs it is sugar maple and the ends and side are still painted my mustard yellow I sealed them with
My theory is that curl is affected by wind. Just a thought for right now but I've found curl near the stump of some of trees and also at large crotches. Mainly on the compression side of the branch. It's just my 2ยข. I'm still learning though with every tree I cut up.
