Has anyone used a CSL for their fireplace chimney? I had my fire place flue inspected last month, I need some brick work down around the crown. The guy said my chimney looks pretty good (camera inspection) and I don't need a sweep.
This is our 4th winter in the house and really only use the fire place on the weekends. (Have no idea how much it has been used over the years prior to us living here) He did recommend a CSL log once per year as a pm measure. So I figure I would give it a shot.
    Any thoughts/experience?

Grizzly Adam did a test on them, they seem kinda dangerous.

Yes Grizzly said that they actually make the chimney fires happen more likely. Mostly because the log smolders and smokes. If I have looked at my fair share of recommendations for sweeping and brushing, that’s all you need to do. I’m kinda surprised he said that....most of the people of the business if they are just going to be blunt with you about it and fair, they will say don’t do anything but burn dry wood and not even mention this CSL log. Inspection will do and that’s all.
Looks like you have a clean bill of health for your stove so far. Im just gonna check mine in about 2-3 months give or take. Planning on getting my own brushes. $100 for getting a sweep out here, the installer for my chimney said you can do it yourself and if you think it’s necessary for me to do paperwork for your home insurance just give them a call. Otherwise its an open and shut case. If anything the inspector would be inspecting the pipe and crawlspace protector, the shield for corrosion. depends on your area and the humidity for rust.

the Chimney guy was actually really cool. He advertises on our local Long Island News station. He did mention to only burn dry wood, I told him I am in the process of getting my stacks to dry the right way thanks to all of you here!
I just might hold off on this CSL log for now. When I do hire him to do my brick work repair I will ask him to sweep my flue as well. I need the piece of mind

You’re gonna get others saying this and that later bud, its your peace of mind that matters most. Im looking forward to responses here too, opinion through experience is appreciated here. Always good to have another review as heading into the burning season will be very busy soon.

You really shouldn't need them if you burn properly, imo. In fact they'd be a waste of $ and might even do more harm than good.
If you're not burning properly, burning one just before you sweep the chimney might help with sweeping the chimney. I rather doubt it.
I would NOT burn one in a catalytic stove.
