I'm about to buy a echo cs400. I read up on what I could find, and the way I understand it.. seems like a nice saw for about 250 bucks. Other than popping off the limiter caps and gutting the vegetables from the muffler, it seems like a nice little saw. Can't seem to find a bare power head though. Havent seen a review from a source that has used it more than for storm damage, or cutting firewood. Anyone have anything to add from the professional side of things? I dont want a heavier saw, as this will be for my daughter who is 11, and I'm sure I will inherit it back in about 2 years max.

Just bought it. A friend who works for asplundh just told me to get it. I guess they ran them for several years hard now. He likes them. Sorry for knee jerk post.

I have had one of those Echo CS400's for a few years. Mine came very lightly used off of Ebay. Like you said about storm damage. I think that the previous owner bought it for that as the paint wasn't even worn on the bar.

It has never failed to start and is going to be my "stay on the tractor saw," when I get it back from the extended loan-out. My 85 year old grandfather has had her for almost 2 years and uses it whenever he gets the chance. He will occasionally drop off a few chains for me to sharpen up for it. All and all, it is a nice little 40cc saw.

Enjoy the addition to your fleet!

Good deal. I figured it would be a good saw for beavrn. Alot of times I'm hitting rocks and mud, instead of willows and water when cutting through ice. When I was a kid it was way worse, but when the snow really piles up I still misjudge lodges and tear up chains.

Great saw for the money. All I used the first 2 years I burned and did 6-8 cords a year. Limiter removal and muff mod and it’s a great saw. I still have 3 of them.

Fold the hem up on the inside and use safety pins. That way when she grows you can take the pins out.

That is what I said. Would have been fine. I ended up putting grommets in them. Had to get the leggings to fit more secure. She seemed content with that.

I am new to the site. It is amazing when you randomly find a group of like minded people! I have a cs-400 and I was wondering if there is a post about the muffler mod that might provide me some guidance. I was not able to hunt it down if it exists on the site. My question is really about how aggressive I should be. A gentleman on YouTube suggested drilling a hole through the baffles.

On my 400 saws I removed the catalytic converters, drilled a hole thru the baffle and removed the exhaust deflector and cut out the baffle on it. You will need to remove the limiter plugs on the carb high and low screws so that you can retune the saw. Really wakes the saw’s performance up.

That is exactly what I did. Love that little saw. Light enough for my little girl too. If they ever come out with a truly big saw, I'm grabbing one.
