Just saw that our county fair will be having chainsaw competitions this year. Thinking about running my AWOL 562XP in an event. Anybody have any tips, or chain style recommendations? Wondering about a square file chain verse say full chisel.
Square filing is a way to sharpen full chisel btw. Those chains are full chisel as apposed to semi so imagine the #7 (full chisel) vs. a ? (semi chisel).
Yup, Chisel chain has two profiles, round ground or square ground. Round ground is sharpened with a conventional round file or grinding wheel. Square ground takes considerable expertise/skill to do well. It is done with a special file or specialty grinder. How To File Square Chisel Chain
So today was competition day. First time ever entering a chainsaw event. There were 4 different brands represented. Husqvarna, Jonsered, Mikita, and Stihl. Classes were broken down by cubic inch, and open class. Any saw not stock was supposed to run in open class. I say supposed to because there where a couple saws that to my ear did not sound stock. The 60cc Jred and a Stihl 462 owned by the same family are 2 that come to mind. Wood was bark on pine logs between 6-8 inches across. 3 cuts, 2 down, 1 up in a 6 inch span. Starts were done with the saw in hand and running. Any cut out was a DQ. So since my AWOL 562XP is not stock I ran in the open class. For whatever reason I bogged my 3rd cut and ended up cutting out of the 6 inch parameter trying to regain my cut speed. It was a fun time, and nice to see everyones saws. Next year I'll run a shorter bar than my 20 inch.
Ahh.....Yes. the old master and owner of the chainsaw shop had a saying whether it was stock or ported...................He would say, "it is just a good running stock saw". And then grin. Shortly after that he told me about the saw they blew up when it ran away because of too much nitro in the gas.
