Hi guys and girls, Just bought a house on 5 acres. Mostly grass but some woods. Also may be cutting 2 acres for the neighbor. Need a tractor that can cut grass, Go in the woods(4X4), run a post hole digger, has a loader, and can till. First thing first is should I buy new or used? I have no problem working on tractors but I plan on living here forever so is it worth it to buy new?

New or used is a preference thing in my opinion. I like new (when I can afford) because I know that the previous owner hasn't abused the machine. I have a JD 2305 with loader and it's nearing 900 hours. Couple belts, a deck spindle, 1 front tire and a pto switch has been all I've worked on. I bought it new. It has been extremely handy and does a nice job on the lawn.

TriumphRob in my opinion it depends on cash flow and your area market.. where I am the prices do not go down much for top tier tractors.. Kubota John Deer etc.. I mean a 5 year old one with 1000 hours is only 2000 less than new on 20k tractor! independent sale means cash ... 6 year financing for 0% came into my decisions. .. I actually bought a rental (250 hours) I knew guy renting it .. 0 percent 4 years and it is still worth more than I paid for it 8 years ago.. that's scary... so if you can wait for a great deal wait.. or or ask here and they will flood your inbox with ideas!

Price you're willing spend would probably factor into new/used as the 0% financing options on new machines can give you more purchasing power.
I can't say down here that I've seen many great used deals - mostly in the Kubota BX series and occasional JD 1 series that are super low hour machines that you can tell were being used on 3-5acre homes with little to no woods. There's a BX local here to me that is essentially new low hour for $9900 w/loader, box blade and belly mower(listing expired on c-list but I have the guys number)
then this B7100 just popped up Kubota tractor $3950 - never been covered in its life
You're grass cutting may be better served on a ZT really depends on how many obstacles exist in the cutting areas

I went through the same process years ago. I couldn't anything used locally that want beat to heck. Just looking lately, it seems like anything used is so close to the price of new, it just isn't worth it to me. Most of the manufacturers have 0 or very low interest rates-of your financing, new may just cost less on a monthly basis.

    York rake 600
    mower 1200
    FEL?
tiller, post hole digger, Harley rake, winch, grapple OK I can stop there....:dex:

Go new or used with low hours. Warranty is worth its weight in gold and you never know how the previous owner used it before. :dex:

As above, zero turn mower would be a priority for me.

New or used? One thing to consider, new will have a Tier IV engine which means more stuff to go wrong and all but Mahindra have a DPF that needs replacement periodically. Used, you can get away from this. Just something to think about.

What are you planning to use a "post hole digger" for. If it's for fencing, it's way better to use a post pounder. I was able to rent a pull behind unit for like $85/day and it worked really slick.( Extreme Driver Trailer Model ) If you want to dig footings or something else, you could always rent an auger attachment for your 3 pt hitch.

If I could buy a new tractor ($$$$) I certainly would. I went a different route than many others. I had a lot of grass to cut, but no brush. I purchased a quality lawn mowing machine and found a very used grey market satoh tractor to use on other projects. That was more than 15 years ago and I still have less than 1k in the little satoh (mitsubishi) tractor 13pto horse power 4x4. The tractor will go any place you can take an atv ( not as fast ) and can out pull a team of atv's. The tractor has outlasted several quality (JD and Woods) mowers and just keeps on chugging along.
I moved to a wooded area and still have a lawn mowing machine but it just sits under the shed most of the time. The little tractor is the primary work horse on everything from pulling logs out of the woods to driving down to the mailbox to get the mail. My tractor doesn't have a loader on it and that is the main reason I would buy a new one if I could afford it, but the little satoh would not be traded in or sold.

I would buy a new tractor. You can get 0% financing with a new tractor. You can get it equipped the way you want it. You don't have to worry about a new tractor being abused like a used one.

If you have the money you can find some deals on used implements. At the same time it does make sense to get them combined with the tractor loan. The more implements you have the more useful your tractor is.

Agreed. This is in my purchasing plan. This time, all will be new. Service and warranty at nearby dealer.
