Cleaning the car headlights, take a rag and some glass cleaner? Oh no! Not like the old days?

    Hello
Wow? It is not just dirty glass headlights you can just wipe off!!
So here are the easiest steps I found!!
    Anything else to consider?
    1. Mask area around headlight to absorb splatter.
    2. Using a gentle cleaner, spray on plastic headlight lens and wipe off the dirt. I used a vinegar solution in a spray bottle.
    3. Use special plastic cleaning polish like Meguires PlastX Polish with a high speed polisher. I used an HF air polisher 2400 RPMs but a 15,000 or 21,000 RPMs would even be better. Apply and grind polish.
I removed the application from the polisher and manually spread the polish all over the plastic lens. Then put the pad on and polished until the lens was clear.
Repeat step 3 three times to complete the polishing.
    4. Use the buffer pad to make it shine.
    5. Use a paper towel or dry micro fiber cloth to polish corners and any missed spots.
    6. Spray on the protector 1st coat and allow 3-5 mins to dry and spray on second coat for a lasting clean shine.

    Pic 8 - spread polish
Pic 9 - polish with high RPMs repeat 3 times
Pic 10 - Buff with buffer pad
Pic 11 - wipe corners and missed spots
Pic 12 - spray 2 coats of protector like Meguires headlight protector
Pic 13 - remove masking tape
Pic 14-16 All done - looks like new!
Hopefully this will last a while!

Nice, looks like it works great.

I’ve been using this kit for a while. I’ve bought it twice and done many vehicles.

    Very nice
My only question is, do the headlights stay clean for a long time after using that kit?

That is quite the difference. I read somewhere that you can use toothpaste as the polishing agent, but have never tried it.

They do pretty well. Depending on how opaque, I don’t have to use all grits after the first go round. Mostly just use a liquid plastic polish once/twice a year.
Seeing the difference, couple family members requested the treatment which is basically why I had to buy the kit more than once.

My last truck was with me for 15 years. It sat out in the weather for all but about 9 days in total. Headlight 'clear coat' was toast around year 8 even with ubiquitous waxing and polishing. Did the headlight 'restore' thing. about a year and a half later they were getting hazy again. I finally put my big boy pants on and bought two new headlight assemblies.

I had several vehicles in my youth with glass headlamps. They were plenty bright enough for me. When one went out, you just bought a whole new light to replace for $10-12 IIRC.

    Hi BB
When the headlight kits first came out they were expensive and there was only enough to do it a few times.
Now Meguires has the good stuff cheap at Walmart and plenty for many many times!
These are made special jist for this. :)
    Headlight Plastic Polish
    Meguiar's Plast-X Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish - Walmart.com
    Headlight Coating
Meguiar's Keep Clear Headlight Coating - Maintain The Clarity Of Your Headlights, G17804, 4 Oz - Walmart.com
Also you can get the Ryobi polishing pads cheap at Home Depot that work on a regular drill. :)

I've used whitening toothpast in the past to polish scratched CD's (using a bench polisher) and it worked amazingly well. Brought back some CD's that were scratched so bad they wouldn't even read! But you gotta be careful not to the the plastic hot, thats the key.

I just use my Rupes Mille and plastic polish. Takes a minute or two. Although we don't have the vehicles we used to which had those faded headlights.

That's very interesting. First I have heard of this product. I use CarPro's HydrO2 foam to wash our vehicles (once proper paint correction has been done in Spring), so it applies a sealant over the whole vehicle every time I wash them.

Need to do this to wife’s Volvo. I looked into replacing the headlight assembly and they were going to be north of $300 each :bug:

    That’s cheap! :D

My wifes ‘16 Acadia has a burned out LED running light on one side. You can’t just replace a bulb, you have to get the whole headlight assembly. Cheapest we’ve found is still over $900...

This Meguires headlight coating is made for plastic headlight lenses and has UV blocking so it lasts about 2 years. :)

The way i was shown was to use 400/600/800/1000/1500/2000/3000 grits with water and then a plastic polish to get rid of the haze. We used 3" pads and sandpaper on a die grinder. Pads and sandpaper where made by 3m.

Tape all around the headlight on painted surfaces. In case you slip, paint doesn't get nicked up. Each step of sanding you're looking for a uniform "scratch" pattern for each grit. Gotta work out the previous grits scratches. Slow process but very rewarding. Can restore almost any headlight this way.

Actually for a few more dollars, this looks like a very good deal. 30 sanding pads for each grit!
