So I got a letter in the mail for city ordinance violation. City ordinance only allows for 6 cord of wood on a property. Says I have 14 days to get in compliance! I have around 20 cord! I’m going to have to give the city a call Monday, it’s going to take a lot longer than 14 days to get rid if 14 cords! It’s not like 20 cord just showed up out of nowhere!
Yep! And my lot is about an acre and the wood is stacked neat covering a chain link fence! So it’s not an eyesore or anything.
I just started selling wood 2 weeks ago. Sold 3 loads so far. Seems coincidental that I just started selling and then get the violation! My plan was to keep about 20 cord on hand and just replenish loads as I sell them. Got to figure out a plan B now!
Can’t fight it like a building variance? Can’t camouflage it behind some sort of structure? Go underground? Literally!
Oh boy. I think I'd go to the city/ town and speak with them about how you heat your home, and that in order for you to not emit stinky smoke that you need to have the wood dry enough before you burn it. However many cords of wood per heating season, then 3 years worth so it's properly dried.... I highly doubt that the people that set the "rules" didn't do much thinking, and if they did, they didn't realize that burning green wood isn't a good idea. If they give you grief, maybe ask them if they'll cover your deductible if you have a chimney/ house fire.
The 6 cords rule is just a man made limit/arbitrary number. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Point the judge here for confirmation of the 3 year plan. Tell them you'll agree to 9 cords or whatever your 3 yr amount is. Otherwise just camouflage it.
Seems there is a variance allowance. No more than six cords of firewood shall be stored at any time, without the written approval of the health and fire departments.
I’d love to have a building that would hold 20 cord! I look into building a large garage a couple years ago, it was WAY not in the budget!
All great ideas guys. I’m going to call on Monday. I’ll be surprised if they budge. But they better give me an extension to get it sold.
Or what? Torch the entire hoard at once and see what they have to say! I would not live somewhere with such rules. This is why any level of government should be kept in check and why I have less and less tolerance for people as I age
That's a bunch of rubbish among other things. It reminds me of my township worrying about small, idiotic compliance issues but do nothing about the illegal salvage yards around, or the house with 10 junk cars.
