We get a real tree every year(22 year tradition). Just got the Oslo last year. What do you think of my protection device to keep the tree from drying out too quick? Tree did fine last year, just some of the needles on the side facing the stove got a little dry. image.jpg

Wow, that is close. If you do as well as you did last year doing the same thing it looks like you'll be ok.
Do you run a humidifier in the house during the winter?

Planning on getting a humidifier soon. Recommendations on a good humidifier?

Looks like your device might work...until she sees it! Hopefully you can place the tree in another part of the room?...maybe?...Too late?

Nine foot tree....I keep suggesting a new location, but to no avail . The good news is if we get a really cold or really warm December (either are possible in Ohio) it won't be an issue. If it's super cold, the wood furnace will be running instead of the stove. If it's super warm, the heat pump will be running.

I use a 15 yr old Sears 'whole house' humidifier. I don't even think they make this kind anymore.
I like it because I get about 3 gallons a day into the air. It definitely feels more comfortable
to breath and less dry on the skin, especially with the stove going 24/7.

Right where I want to be.
    Water, then, water, then water.
    Did I mention water?
I think if you don't leave it up until June, you're probably ok.

Right. One thing I have been always particular about is watering the tree like crazy. We never let the water reserve get dry and we take our tree down after New Year's.

I'll never forget Firefighter Jake when he told about experiments with Christmas trees and how they proved (to his amazement) that most of the stories that are told about tree fires are pure baloney. He was even on tv and tried to show how fast the tree would to up. Using a torch, he had a terrible time even getting it to light!

We only had a couple casualties with our move last year, one was our artificial tree. We were going to get a real one this year, but sweeping on subfloor is harder than you'd think! Found another artificial, 50% off online at target. PS, I would have the tree up and decorated by halloween if the old one was still here. :)

I have been involved in fighting two fires where the obvious points of origin were the Christmas tree. Neither involved a wood burning appliance. Both were mutual aid calls, and I really have no idea of the conclusions of the investigations, but sobering experiences nonetheless.

    Keep it hydrated.
