Help me make up my mind please. I just bought a new 400,000 btu heater and it says it can use kerosene, diesel, heating oil #1 or #2 or jet fuel. When I was younger we had a smaller sears one and it could make your eyes burn. I've been told that the new low sulfur fuels won't do that, fact or bull ? I'm going to use it sporadically to heat a well ventilated pole barn and to blow heat at us when we're working outside. What fuel would you pick and why ? 3 1/2 gallons per hour is it's thirst.
Figuring someone here would be in the know. As always your collective advice is always appreciated.

Kerosene would be the cleanest I would think...but not hard to fill a couple 5 gallon cans and try 'em all!

Well supposedly jet fuel is sulfur free kerosene that is extra clean.

I was thinking kerosene would be better, but I was hoping diesel would be acceptable. Thought was bouncing around my head about using the 40 gallon tank as a "bulk tank" for my tractor. A lil xtra plummun is all.

My experience is that running diesel in 'em is OK once they are hot...cold starts are stinky though!

Old truck shop that used to be here had one and it smoked terrible. Frequently saw them cooking hot dogs on a screwdriver in front of it.

Jet fuel is basically ultra clean kerosene. Cold start on kerosene and run diesel on refills.

IMG_20181215_215913383_HDR.jpg so I picked it up, it's a bit bigger than I expected.
Went for kerosene and the hose won't reach, kept short so people don't put non road taxed kero in vehicles, dang.
Go back home and get a 5 gallon can and fill it 6 times and pour it in.
It's up pretty high on my flatbed so I couldn't miss the opportunity to slip and pour it all down the front of me. Dang #2
204lbs of kero at $142 to fill it. Just under $14.00 an hour to run it.....oh boy.
Go home and fire it up, burns great quiet to boot.
Flip it off, it's supposed to do a 1 minute cool down..... Instead it spews burning kerosene out the front and onto my truck. Dang #3
Take the top off and the solenoid valve is IMG_20181215_200443276_HDR.jpg going into #2 and outa #1. Oh cool..... yeah.
The nut holding the coil on was so flipping tight I was concerned about breaking something. Although the supply line was left loose even with a QC sharpie mark on it.
Put my clothes in the laundry..... I see my wife thru them outside....
I think a cocktail is in order.......

Still have a small one around here somewhere- went to propane many moons ago- no stink and no messing around with clogged up nozzles and what not when you want it. Big thing was I could run the propane units in the attached garage and not get a verbal lashing about stinking up the house. Although that differential goo would get me banned from the living quarters.

Propane would have been nice but the minimum requirement for a heater this size was 2, 100lb tanks in parallel. Kinda kicks mr.portability in the nuts.

Close friend uses a few different heaters in his shop when brings in frozen equipment, i asked him what he was using for fuel as it didn't smell at all, normally always get a slight smell with diesel or kerosene, wouldn't tell me
Finally after a bit of prodding he said it was a vegetable based industrial solution, gets it in totes from somewhere,

Works real good in a solvent tank for parts cleaning, smells kinda nice too!!
