Admittedly not great at identifying trees unless they are the big three I generally cut. Lost a limb off this and trying to decide what to do with the wood. Anyone know what it is for certain ?

I agree, Looks like black cherry. Lots of people call it choke cherry around here, so it is a common name, but there's another (wild) black cherry also clled choke cherry that grows not quite so tall and is often referred to as a 'bush' even though it can grow 20-30 feet tall. Prunus virginiana and prunus serotina have a lot more in common than they don't. I don't know if I could tell the two apart having not seen the difference.

It's decent firewood after a year or more of seasoning.
Smells too bitter to me but some like it for smoking meats .

Yep, smells really nice in a wood stove or campfire for sure.

Awesome, it is a big tree , maybe 30-40’ I would guess. Debating on dropping it to give garden more sun for a couple years. Not sure what caused the limb to fall but if it is good wood I may go ahead and fell it. Thanks for the info !
