    Hi Guys -

I've signed up for an account for chipdrop, to try and get some free logs from local tree services. One of the questions is "is there any type of wood species I don't want?"

From a firewood standpoint, is there anything I don't want to get?

    Joe

Pine chips aren't that great. The needles don't break down very fast....
But...it may be good to let them drop off some if it gets you good contacts for future wood scores.

Thanks guys, I don't be getting any chips. I have the option of logs, chips or both. I've got access to all the wood chips I need.

You're talking to someone from the Evergreen State. Is there anything other than Pine and Fir?

I don’t think you can really choose but here’s the deal from what I heard around here people talking about. If you apply for chip drop, you got a better chance at getting logs. The chips are take them as is. You could offer a place to put them and then maybe sell the stuff for cheap around your area? People like using it for mulch or whatnot. Give and take.

You can request logs. I opted out of willow, all pines and firs(I have plenty here) aspen and cottonwood. I have mostly softwoods in my stacks and was looking for maples and oak.

I just took my request out as bigger projects are starting here and I don't have time now. Stacks are getting pretty filled too. I was on for about a month and no drops.

    Good luck.

I keep renewing my request, it's been 4 months or so and nothing.

I got a load of ash 3 or 4 weeks ago. I'd been on the list for about a year with nothing, then, boom! Checking the Chipdrop map there have been about 50 drops in the last couple of months in the Cincinnati area, just my 1 drop on the Kentucky side of the river. The map does not specify whether the drops were chips, logs or both.

    Good luck!:salute:

The only thing I tend to steer clear of is large diameter, seasoned cottonwood. It’s like trying to split concrete. It’s not bad to split when it’s still green, but dry is a bear. It burns fine though, if you want to give it a shot.

My dad always said “A stove full of something will keep you warmer than a stove full of nothing.”

Cottonwood, Willow and Box Elder. I have a splitter so I'd take any Elm.

    willow = Yuk !!
If you're home when they come slip them few bucks for a beverage or 2. So many rude people that they deal with a bit of niceness goes a long way.

By the way, I'd take any species of wood. What I can't or won't use in the stove goes into the fire pit or bonfire pile.

Willow, tupelo (aka black gum) & sycamore come to mind. Any softwood if you dont want to burn them.
