So lately I’ve been interested in getting one of the Tuatahi china axe heads. They come unfinished and you have to grind in your bevels to finish it. Which as of right now I have no clue where I’m able to send that to happen. Apparently if you grind them right they are great work/ splitters. But just wondering everyone’s thoughts and if anyone has experience with em
I'm not sure I understand why. Add to that, when I looked up Tuatahi website it's says they're from New Zealand. So......
I mean I like how it looks and seems to perform well soooooo I’m interested. I dunno just curious lol
Idk about the "China" ones but the real ones from New Zealand aren't cheap. Or at least the race head i looked at was $300 USD and it was unshaped.
Didn't seam like something someone would just buy out of the blue. Would be better to get some yard sale axes or heads to play around with first.
Also I have a bunch of axes already I use so I’m not sure why I need to get some garage sale axes to play with
The cheapest I could find was this one and it's $200 USD just for the head but you don't have to grind it. https://www.tuatahiaxes.com/product-page/tuatahi-camp-axe I didn't know if that was why you were interested in buying an unfinished axe head. To practice yourself but I see in you original post you would have someone else do that for you? Seems like a big hassle to me but if that's what you're interested in....
Oooh I gotcha I see what you’re saying and thanks for other link. All I would have someone do is grind bevels in but I hear ya and see what you’re saying
Cool. I was just trying to have a convo, get to know ya a little better, while you wait for someone who's knowledgeable on the subject to comment. Sounds like it could be a fun project if you get into grinding them yourself. Could change the profile slowly and really learn a thing or two. Maybe buy the China axe to practice on and then one of their better heads later. I see the China one isn't made buy them but they can recommend it.
I’m sure I could figure out a bevel filing/grinding jig But yea that could be something fun to get into for sure. I just wanted to use it as a work axe/ splitter so I was just thinking of having someone do it as a one and done kinda thing but you may be on to something
You take your axes seriously! I wonder if there is an axe hoarding thread some where? I did like my Collins axe when I use to hand split. The Fiskers X25 & X27 are decent, but I had a habit of breaking them. I still used the X25 on occasion.
