I use YouTube for entertainment and stumbled across this video a guy explaining about sharpening a chain with a file chucked into a hand drill. Of course on YouTube when you watch one video, the suggested videos will include more of the same so he is not the only one using this technique. I thought I would post it for others to give their opinion.

Yes this method can get a chain sharp. I also think it is taking life away from the chain by removing to much from the cutter. Probly much better to purchase a chain grinder and do it correctly.

I'm no expert but I don't think it's a bad idea but it's not the world's best method and not better than the best grinders .
Someone new to chain sharpening could screw up a chain real good .
Seems similar to using a dremel and stone

I guess I'd like the demonstration to address the rakers also.

That aside, I think it's an interesting idea.

I'd rather just hand file. More accurate, harder to mess up, don't need to worry about heating up and drawing temper, etc. But, whatever works for you...

Looks like a good way to ruin a file.

It is sooooo wrong. Files are not designed to cut in a circular motion. Only in the push and you shouldn't scrape or drag them on metal on the pull. Please don't practice this method, only laugh at it!

After trying just about every gimmick out there over the years, Ive gone back to hand filing. Your chains last longer, and its not exactly the hardest thing to do.

Double bevel for squarefiling. You can hit the rakes with them as well.
