I was cutting some firewood today and while cutting some small branches my chain came off. Now it has little raised parts on the teeth that go into the bar grove. i had this happen twice. How can I fix this without ruining the chain. This forum has been a great resource for me!

You can file the dings off the drivers so they will fit the bar groove or if it’s a well used chain retire it.

When you have the chain off clean the broove on the bar where the chain rides.

That stinks. I’m a stickler for keeping slack out of my chain. It’s a habit now to occasionally check the tension after cutting a while. Keeping slack out will greatly reduce the chances of a chain coming off, especially when cutting brush.

It is very common when you have a spur or paddle wheel clutch drum.
Best way to insure it doesn't happen again . Replace the clutch drum with a floating rim drum and drive sprocket.
Throwing your chain is part of cutting. Eventually you will get so you seldom throw your chain. But in the mean time, a floating rim drum and sprocket will almost totally eliminate beat up drive teeth on your chain.

If you are flinging chain a lot, try and tension it a little bit tighter. And be very conscious when cutting to slow down a little and make cuts without moving the bar side to side. When I was processing apple trees in the orchards, I learned fast how to prevent it. The small shoots in the tangled mess of a couple trees pushed together was a challenge at first and I had my share of chain offs.

I think I will replace it. Is it hard to remove the old one?

It is ironic because it was little branches that made both of the chains slip off.

Yeah, that's just how it works. Aside from a worn bar, that's the only way I've had chain derailments. From small branches...

Probably the most common way to throw an otherwise properly installed chain . WE all tend to look at the branch we are going to cut ,and miss the little branch sneaking under the chain . As was stated above ,it’s all a learning process . Apparently , I need an occasional “reminder “,as I am a hard learner …

    Hey Cold Trigger Finger,

Do you or anybody know where I can get a floating rim drum for my Husqvarna 450 Rancher?

No. It is a learning curve . But , you almost always throw your chain from the top down on the tip. Mostly when you get thru a limb or a small tree or something small.
It's usually from Not catching/controlling the tip when it cleans thru the cut.
Mostly when a guy gets tired or is not paying attention.

I don't know where a guy could find a floating rim clutch drum . I would think maybe Amazon ?? Do you have a good saw shop there where you are.

I'm not sure wether it's an inboard or an outboard clutch. Or if it's an outboard clutch , wether it takes a socket . Or it needs a special socket that fits in the splines of the clutch.
You tube probably has a few vids on 450 clutch removal.
Just remember. Righty Loosey lefty tighty.
    An impact driver works best.

I ordered it from Amazon. There is an Ace hardware not too far away that has a lot of chain saw stuff. They sharpen blades but it is pretty expensive.

Make sure you don't need a different worm drive for your oil pump. Sometimes conversions get tricky.

I know on the Husky 460 Rancher it was just replace the spur sprocket clutch drum with the floating rim drum and drive sprocket. Not sure on the 450.
The 460 needed a clutch spline socket.
A person can make a spline sprocket from an old socket that is big enough to fit over the shaft. If they have an angle grinder and a vise.

BTW. I highly reccomend OREGON replacement clutch drums and sprockets.
I have no idea what other brands may make them . But Oregon works and lasts.
They aren't that expensive. And I have Never had a bad one.

When I run across a chain like yours I break out with the dremel and take the burrs down with it. Easy and fast.
