Been considering this for a while now and finally did it. I bought a Tjernland RB12 register booster fan for the upstairs room above the stove room. I also installed a ceiling register in the stove room as the intake for the register booster upstairs. The fan uses the floor joists as a duct or chase for the air to flow thru. First test tonight but seems to be working perfectly. I read 82 deg downstairs in the intake register and 79 deg upstairs in the register booster!! Should help keep the stove room from getting crazy hot and help upstairs stay a little warmer. I'll report back as I use it more.

I'm my 1880s Victorian farmhouse I had 2 gravity type vents like yours Trilifter7 , inbetween two floors. I know in my case they may be grandfathered because of them being original to the house but I was bagged on one of them in my stove room during a stove inspection in 2008. I know they are illegal in today's building code but can be allowed with a fire door. So the inspector asked me to install one or close it off as a fire hazard. I ended up installing a fire door on the stove room register in order to keep the vent. Just wanted to share that because some folks might not know.

    Yep, what MyIS said...

Care to run an experiment with and without the fan? I bet you don't even need the fan in there to see some pretty significant improvements.

You can barely here the fan. It sounds like a standard register blowing air when the heat or ac is on.

I am glad you posted this. I am thinking about the same thing. Can you post a link where you found this fan? Please update us on how well this works. Thanks!

I offset the registers by about 10 feet so I doubt there is very much natural air movement there. I could try it still and see if I get draft or increase in temp out of the open register.

Ahhhh, no then the fan makes plenty of sense. I think the only thing holding me back from doing the same thing is having kids who are very light sleepers. Stove room directly beneath bedrooms, so I'd end up closing at night and opening in the morning.

Here's a better pic to show where it's at in the stove room

    image.jpg

In relation to that pic the register booster upstairs is about 10 feet back towards the middle of the room along the wall so it stays in the same joist chase. The floor/ceiling joists run from behind me in that pic toward the stove.

My stove room is directly below our master bedroom as well. I noticed no difference in noise from down stairs to up. I think having them offset helped that a lot. If anything the fan in the bedroom was nice bc it droned out any other noises in the house and was somewhat soothing to sleep to.

Thanks cnice! We just moved in last year so we are still getting things settled. Next project is putting a stone wall up behind the stove. I'll post some pics when I do it.

Brookville is about 3.5 hours south west of Eaton Township. I'm south west of Cleveland, Brookville is around Dayton, OH.

Gotcha, there's an Eaton, Ohio that's about 20 min west of Brookville so wasn't sure if it was the same one.
