Can you burn coal in a brick fireplace in your home

    can you burn coal in a brick fireplace in your home

    I was wondering if that would be safe
    if it is id get a huge fire grate and put in 200 lbs of large chunks of coal

    I would guess there would be a lot of adverse health effects if you did-- like black lung.

    Not sure of the point. You would still get the normal inefficiency of an open fireplace, but without the pleasures typically associated with an open fire.

    gunny100 ... I burned coal in a furnace in the basement of our old farm. The smell of rotten eggs on re-starts, and black dust every where... were too much after 4 years. Changed to wood and oil heat. The blue flames that settle on top of a glowing bed of hot coals are nice, but I'd never burn it in anything but an enclosed coal stove/furnace.
