You can burn almost anything if you really want to. Personally I'd take the lights off first.

Our tree goes onto our deck and stays green well into spring. Once it turns, we put it in the burn pile. When I finally burn it, I get flames going 25+ feet up in the air.

I keep telling myself that I want to get a live tree. Yes they are more expensive, but you can pre-dig the hole for one in the fall. Once Xmas is over you can go plant the tree. I have a stone wall where I'd love to line it with Xmas trees.

We take ours out to either add to a brush pile or create a new one. Rabbits love them and it gives other critters places to hide. Even during the summer months birds can hide, say, if a hawk is after them and they need a quick hiding place.
