While we were working up that maple and old fellow stopped by and told me he had recently put a whole chestnut tree out at the tree dump. All I found out there recently was a whole American elm, or what was identified as elm. Could this have been his tree?
Well there is no live American chestnut trees over a few inches in diameter left.. chineese chestnut yes. Chestnut oak yea. But it would be some old deteriorated log from the mountains to be American chestnut.
There are American chestnut - just not in abundance a place up in Michigan I believe has a stand of it left, and one was found on a timber purchase not to far from my property a few years ago.
Oh maybe remote trees I just know here in Appalachia we don't have any. Would love to see one in person one day.
Ok, I wonder if I missed his tree or if he thought this was chestnut. The only other thing out there recently was willow.
yup ohio buckeye or horsechestnut.Lightweight, soft & weak, light colored.Fairly heavy when green though.
I think I remember that we have a small grove of American chestnut here in Wisconsin. NW part of state somewhere.
Here in Appalachia I have only seen stump sprouts that are maybe 30 ft tall and a few inches in diameter.
