Define cheap, I got this one for $30, really happy with it. http://www.lowes.com/pd_78059-56005-MMD4E_0__?productId=3136919
+1. I own this one as well. Works good. Don't know if you can buy one cheaper. If you can you would then prolly have to pay shipping which would offset the savings. 6 of one .....
I hear harbor freight has a "cheap" one...walked around their store for 10 minutes and couldn't find it, the sales associate was no help either so I have no idea what isle it is in if they stock it. You can find the Lowes over in the tools section by levels and what not. http://www.harborfreight.com/http-www-harborfreight-com-digital-mini-moisture-meter-67143-html.html
I too am in the market for a moisture meter. I found several on Amazon. Believe it or not there is a Stihl meter on there for $40. I've never used a meter nor do I know what brands are good.
I also bought mine from Lowes for about $30.00.. A bunch of guys bought the one from Menards and that looks like a really good deal.... http://www.menards.com/main/tools-h...ools/moisture-test-meter/p-1710550-c-9163.htm
I have this one, to your door under $10. Reads the same as the $75 one my father got from Rockler for woodworking.
I have the General model as well. Think I got mine at Home Depot though. Runs on a common 9v battery (included), which could be a consideration. "Cheaper" models might not seem so cheap if you need to mail order to replace some exotic battery.
The Menards one looks to be the same as the Harbor Freight one but in a different color. That cyan scheme is pretty sharp but the red looks more rugged haha.

Ok I've searched the Stihl website and I can't seem to find a moisture meter. Knockoff maybe? Not that I need to spend $40 just for it to say Stihl.
I have the one from lowes. In my store they were 25 bucks, and we're on an endcap in the flooring section, not with the tools or other meters. Took a while to track them down
Had no idea they cost so low. Menards will be getting a visit from me soon and I guess I'll have to add this to the list now.
Like he said, the cost of an odd battery will make The General MM more attractive because it takes a 9v.
The one I mentioned does take a battery that is "nonstandard ", but it is one I can pick up at any raido shack for less than a dollar, or mail order for less than that. Since a moisture meter isn't something that will affect safety if it is not working for a week or two, a delay in delivery time for a battery isn't a quality that determines which model I purchase. YMMV Regardless the factors that affect the reading of a meter, temp, wood species, among other factors could change the reading 3-5% anyway. So a cheap MM that gets me close is all I need. If it reads 16% and it is off 4%, so my MC is really 20%, does it affect the safety of my fire tonight? I am still going to check my flue every month or month and a half because it is a 10min job and cheap insurance. So if I am burning what I have, in a safe manner not smoldering, who cares if I am 16% or 20%. The only thing an accurate MM is really good for is bragging here
