Currently have a metal firering and the wife wants a brick/ stone one this summer. Nothing fancy just a circle at the campsite. I've built these before but the heat always seems to crack. them Is there a more heat resistant decorative brick?
I built one out of red clay bricks I had laying around the backyard in a pile. I placed a lid from a 55 gallon that was just laying around as well then stacked the bricks around it long ways and probacly 6 rows high and just kepf staggering the ends as the rows went up. It actually looks pretty good for junk I just had laying around and have not had any issues with bricks cracking.
My mother and father in law just got a Solo stove and that thing has really impressed me. I would google it and see what you think. It’s stainless but it’s nice and what they say on the website is all true from what I can tell.
Mine is along the rocky shoreline of a U.P. lake. One or two cracks from the heat, just toss it back into the lake and grab a couple more to replace it. Win/lose relationship right there!
Perhaps if you build the brick with a 1" spacing away from the metal ring and allow away for air to circulate bottom to top between the two that might resolve the problem. Bricks are porous and absorb moisture- heat = steam = broken brick not to mention the expansion ratio différance of the two materials.
Years ago at a past campground I built a stone/quickcrete fire ring. In 1 season it crumbled. Re-did it with a steel tractor rim inside and had the stone/quickcrete right up to the rim and it lasted just fine until we moved.
