Hi gang - I'm at the end of my (gasket) rope here and need some help. Had the Mrs. stop at the dealer and pick up the gaskets for the top griddle and doors for my 1979 Resolute stove. The top fit fine but the ½" door gasket is way too big. They assured her it was the right one and against my better judgement, I listened and installed it. Now my doors won't close. And I'll have to chip this gasket out for the right one. I called that dealer and they suggested I google it... yep no more business for them. Then I tried a second dealer who offered to call Vermont but I figured I could do that myself. Called Vermont and a very nice Brittany helped me out and pointed me to the 3427 gasket kit which I can find on Amazon but can't tell if that's the right gasket for the doors to the stove. I have dual doors. I think the 3/16" gasket is right for the glass but I'm not sure it's big enough to seal the doors. Before I do this job again, I'd like to gain some certainty. The pregnant Mrs. is really sensitive to the charcoal smell of the stove now coming into the house because the doors don't close. Please help!
Maybe if you had some sort of putty stuff; like silly putty, you could put a wad on the door area and shut the door and see what sort of clearance you have. Other than that I have no idea.
What size is the gasket you have on there now, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8? Different stoves take all different sizes, My Lopi takes 7/8 I bought mine from dealer, they are right size. Did Britney tell you the diameter that supposed to be on there?
Also, gasket materials have a varying density. For the stoves I have, I need a high density 5/8"....different form the commonly available 5/8" gasket material. It's not even close to be used for a replacement!
The dealer gave me ½" which is too big. Brittany could only tell me the package description said 3/16" but looking that up online I only see reference to the glass panels (which also have a rope gasket) but I'm not sure that's the same for the outer edge.
Does your manual have a part number for the door gasket?. Should be a different part number for the glass and the door
Unfortunately I don’t have the manual, just the install guide (stove came with the house) and the old manuals I’ve found online don’t have it.
The pregnant Mrs. is really sensitive to the charcoal smell of the stove now coming into the house because the doors don't close. Please help![/QUOTE] Sorry I have no info about the gaskets, but I can understand the pregnant wife/smell issue. Mine is 8 mints along, I have to take my work boots off outside and we cooked some fish for dinner the other night when I got home yesterday all the doors and windows were open she said she could still smell it! Maybe you could find a place that sells different sizes and get a few small pieces to try before you buy. In the past I have brought my stove door to the place that I get my gasket from and tried on a few pieces to find what I want. Just a thought
Man, we'll try anything to keep them happier, no? Just don't let them be around while you hand out those cigars for the birth!!!! They usually aren't the best quality....Good luck
Warner, have you tried adjusting the door latch? It's been many moons ago (9 yrs. now, time flies..), but remember having to do this after re-gasketing the Resolute acclaim that was once here. I just checked the short piece of gasket left on the shelf here from wood burning days, it's 1/2" gasket. ( See the manual WeldrDave posted up, page 27. Clean everything up with a wire brush & some PB blaster before removing.. One washer, IIRC. Store the washers in a safe place! Put back in when the gasket seats in / the door starts feeling loose. )
Good Call! I put the wrong door gasket on my stove (too thick) and adjusting (bending It Out) the latch , the thicker gasket worked fine. Granted, different make and model stove for me though.
Howdy bocefus78 , same here, I thought the same after installing the door gasket .. And was real careful not to use too much cement to line the door frame. The Vermont's are cast iron, no way CtRider is bending that latch. * Thinking back, I also had to purchase some 'thinner' washers to uses as shims to get the door sealed properly - found the cheap pack of thin washers I picked up from the local hardware store out in the workshop. Or it might have been Walmart.. Can't remember now, too long ago. Don't be afraid to "substitute" washers on the door latch to get a good door seal.. * Do the dollar bill test, or use a piece of computer printer paper, folded in half, as needed. That's important. Good luck on the repair CtRider , and Congrats to you & your wife on the new addition to the family. Stay Warm!
Hi guys, thanks for the help - any idea why my Tapatalk app said I didn't have permission to reply? Anyway, I'm an idiot... had my dad look at the stove and he asks "are you sure there's supposed to be a gasket where the two doors overlap? And I thought there was... well I dug out the old one and I only had enough material to the doors without the overlap which means I didn't take an old one out. We adjusted the latch (can't adjust the hinges on my model) and boom... all set. Boy do I feel dumb. Thanks for the help, especially the manual that confirmed the gasket size is indeed ½"
There has been an upgrade to the security on the site! I had the same issue and logging in, some may experience it. Update the/your browser/bookmark, that's what I did. We went from http to https.
