Our house sits on a slab, and in the crawl space is the water pump sitting next to a blue tank which sits within the cut out portion of the base of the slab. The hole in which the tank sits in is surrounded by water filled to the top and is over flowing a bit. I suspect that this is no good. Any advice would help before I call a plumber. Thank you

Sorry, that is bad news. Do you have some way to pump it out to see where the water is coming from?

Do you have a drain in the pit?

Water looks reasonably clean so maybe not ground water. Maybe the bladder tank or one of the connections is leaking. Get it pumped out and check for leaks. If you don't have a pump just drop a garden hose into the hole and hook up a shop vac to the other end outside so you don't have the vac under the house in the wet area.

Well Seasoned I cannot tell from pics.. could be ground water or a leak near bottom of tank ..
Step 1 is get water out of there to see what is causing problem. if you weren't 3 hours away I would grab pex tool and sump pump and be there..

without knowing layout of house is there a way to get a garden hose out and down to drain area then shut water off (main) this will tell you if water is a leak or ground water ... oh not a plumber but a landlord and that makes you experienced.. pressure tank might be leaking

I'm no plumber and don't pretend to be one. My 2 cents, any hole that is part of a home needs to have some way to drain. Your water pressure tank is submerged in water. That isn't good at all. You need a sump or a drain. The larges issue I see is how did the water get there. We are so dry, I can't imagine it is ground water. Something must have failed. I would hate to have that water short out you water system, or pollute it. If you have a wet dry vac, they often have an port at the bottom where you can attach a garden hose. You could suck out the water and drain it off. Then attempt to find the source of the water.

Thank you for your offer despite being a few hours away! I used the pool pump to get the water out. I dried everything off, pump, pipes, etc ran the water for a while to kick on the pump. It appears that their is a very small drop coming from the pump, but certainly not enough to fill the hole. All the pipes look ok, and all was ok when We had the home inspected here before buying. We just bought this place July 11th and were only here a week and a half, left back to Pennsylvania for 3 weeks and have now moved in here officially for the past 5 days.

We have received a ton of rain over the past week, so I won't rule that out. I will watch the water level over the next few days and certainly pay attention to any rains we get. A sump pump will likely go in. Next I'll inspect the tank closer. There is rust, but doesn't appear to be any leaking.

excellent idea on the wet dry vac. I will use it for the remaining bit of water that's in there. A dump pump will be in order for sure! Thank you!

There are utility pumps that are submersible with just a garden hose hook up for the discharge. This may help removing the water from the pit. Might want to consider a sump pump which would be automatic operation and have to be plumbed permanently instead.

Sounds like it may be ground water?
I suppose the pressure tank is already as high as it can be to the floor joists?
    Maybe a horizontal pressure tank?

If you have that type of pump I would assume your well isn't very deep, so the water table may be quite high. This may be why that hole filled up.

No gutters........ Next heavy rain I'm outside investigating things. So far the water hasn't risen. We did get a ton of rain.

Maybe horizontal would be the way to go. There is maybe a half a foot of room to the joists.

That's a good idea. There is a temperature sensor in the area I saw.

Your probably right. I don't think the well is especially deep. It's a dug well. I'll need to go back through my files.

Thanks everyone for your info. I'll keep y'all posted with any findings.
