Been thinking about keeping some wire or rope around the house for pulling trees over or out. Which would you prefer? I know they both have pro's and con's, wire can still break and give you a splinter from hell and rope can get torn up in brush, I know if I use a pulley system I'll need maybe 200ft? Maybe I'm overestimating.

I keep a big azz chain in my truck for those times when rope just won't do. If longer reach is needed, it's the rope.

If you plan on a bit of rough handling like winching with the line dragging around stumps, through dirt and rocks etc. then the steel cable lasts much longer. If just pulling trees over with the line then rope all the way.

I like this rope for pulling and rigging

13,300 lb tensil strength made in America.
I have 200’ for pulling. Gives you a safe distance for tall ones and room to redirect. I would not use it for dragging logs through the mud.

You can purchase synthetic winch rope that off road guys use instead of the steel wire rope. Its just as strong but won't kill you if it breaks because it it isn't heavy. From a quick search I found Harbor freight has 80 ft that 12,000 pound rated. $129.

I think I'm gonna go with this stuff chud uses, thanks all for the comments, I have chain for dragging so I don't think I'll even need cable

That's the same rope I bought only I got the 5/8". I really like it a lot, easy to tie and untie and not "stretchy".

The reason steel cable messes you up isn't just the weight. It's because when it snaps it violently unwinds into a flying mess of tentacles that comes at you like a weedeater. Dyneema on the other hand doesn't unwind so it's more of a narrow strike zone. But I can tell you first hand that when it snaps close to you it is a underwear changing experience.

Might I suggest also getting a rope bag. First time I used one it was a "where have you been all my life " experience!

Yes, you might suggest! I'll get a bag or use a bucket and drill a hole in the lid

Right and honestly rope for rigging chain for dragging cable? Not really necessary, I'll look around for some longer lengths of dyneema before purchase cause I like to be far away :D

A guy I used to work with was yanking on a tree with his new ram and the cable broke. Thousands of dollars in body damage. There were cables impressions back to front. Took out his windshield. Lucky he didn't get hurt.
