The Ontario Provincial government announced that the use of cell phones in the classroom by students will be banned starting this coming school year. Refreshing as that is, it makes me wonder how much it is going to cost local school boards for "addiction counseling" for the poor little darlings..................................

Ontario to ban cellphones in classrooms

I like it and the intention is good but somehow I don't think this is going to end well.

Well, my father was a math teacher, we were not allowed to use any calculators at all until we could do the work without one.

Aside from very large calculations and square roots, I do most math in my head.

I've seen people not being able to figure out the nickel deposit return value on a 12 pack of beer bottles without the use of a calculator.

I fully understand that it's a "different" world now, but really???

I’m pretty sure my sons school has a no cell phone policy but I’m not sure how effective it is. I get texts from him daily when he is at school. Making policies is easy...it’s the enforcement that is difficult.

My wife used to hire school girls to help out in the bakery. None knew how to make change if the computer did not tell them how much to give.

20 some years ago I went into Sears and bought something for $4.99. We had 5% tax at the time . I only had a Ten and some change so gave the cashier $10.24. I figured she was new and just wasn't used to a customer paying with cash instead of a CC as she had to call the manager. But then she handed me a $5 and asked if that was right.
I used to do that all the time trying to get rid of pocket change. What would really throw someone off was if a charge was, say, $4.64 and I handed over $10.14 so I'd get paper and just quarters back instead of more loose change.

My three boys, the youngest is a Senior this year are all competent in basic math, history, science & civics. I saw to that. They're not geniuses or anything, they are just able to function as adults used to be able to be upon graduation. Well, I guess compared to the avg. teenager today, they may be geniuses after all.

You'd think most teachers would have this as a rule in their classrooms anyway.

Our school switched two years ago, to allow phones, but not during class time. Every classroom has a phone pocket bag(looks like an over the door show sorter) and each pocket is numbered. Phones go in as they enter the room and stay there until the bell rings at end of class. If a phone makes noise, even vibrating, they go to the office and the student must get it from their principal at the end of the day. After this happens twice, parents have to come and pick up the phone so they know of the issue.

It’s helped kids not “hide” them so much, but once the bell rings and they are walking the halls, nobody looks up so that’s not good. I also hate that the kids don’t talk as much at lunch and study hall times, but I’m not sure the answer. Other than no phones during the day, which, sadly, seemed impossible to enforce.
Most parents do well and help, but a small percentage have the entitlement ideals and just don’t get it. Meanwhile, I see their kids drifting away from positive relationships and values.
Can’t be too hard on the kids, I spend a couple hours each day on my iPhone reading.

I have a no cell phone policy in my school...actually a "don't see, don't hear policy." Same procedure, kept in office for a day 1st violation, parent come to pick up second time. I think we will use the storage boxes in each class next year.

It a amazing the number of parents that will text their kids. We have a policy that if a parent calls the office we put their child on the phone or have them call back at the earliest opportunity, or we are more than happy to pass along a message, so it's not like they don't access to their kids during the day.

Why should the school or the teacher be the bad guy? How about parents either make them leave the phones at home or put locks on their phone until school is out?

Simply put, no one likes to take responsibility for their own actions....it's always someone else's fault.

Because in most cases, the parents are the initial enabler with regard to the phones, sometimes at a excessively young age......................

It's amazing the phones the kids have. I work in a school where 42% of the kids are eligible for free lunch-yet the phones that they have are amazing. They laugh at the phone I have.
Don't want to turn the thread political, but it doesn't add up to me.... Nobody wants to see kids have what they need more than me...but these phones???

I’m well aware but society needs to look to parents to actually parent.
