Found some mill logs and lots of storm downed black locust here back in the Summer. Access road to a couple town ball fields. Fast forward to November. Neighbor had many oaks taken down and pushed over the edge of their yard. Got the okay to cut it so buzz-saw and I had at it today. Stihl's being our weapons of choice. He was dressed for hunting, i wasnt! Can you spot him in the first pic and the pic above this? A FHC version of where's Waldo! He swings a mean Isocore too! I ended up nicking dirt more than once and him something metal that shot some sparks out. He never finished the cut and i wasnt going to either. I took the BL and him the oak. Poison ivy vine so typical on BL around here. Lots more oak for him and plenty of BL down the way. Fun day cutting despite the obstacles. We may hit it again this week. NOTE: for those that dont know, buzz-saw joined the forum a year after i did, not knowing we live a couple minutes from each other and have become good friends.
Nicely done! Always good to see fellow forum members working together to knock another score out of the park Today was the perfect day to be working outside in the fresh air too.
Great wood. Wow, for someone who only recently found out about black locust, you sure do find a lot of it, and the trees are big! Yuck to the poison ivy, not good for me! Way to go you two buzzards!
Good times! I haven't cut , split , hoarded, loaded or done anything with firewood in months; with the exception of loading it into the wood stove. Felt great to get outside and get some fresh-air and exercise and as always, a fun time working with BRAD. No time yesterday to unload the trailer so that is the plan afterwork tonight and get ready for round two. Need to throw another loop of chain on the saw but that's the easy part.
It's really cool you guys have become friends from this site. Gravity sure is your friend on this score but looks like a lot of unsure footing and trip hazards around. Knowing you, you'll be back again and again till it's all done so be careful.
Was thinking the same thing about the down-hill roll. My notes of caution: i'm replacing trailer lights for the second or third time due to wood finding the lenses and housings in the same situation. (This time im adding quick dissconnects so I don’t need to keep cutting the wires back)!! Enjoying watching you guys. Sca
August of 2020 tropical storm Isaias then later that month a small tornado hit the area. That particular road was hit hard by the tornado (mostly tree damage) and lots of BL there. Those two storms have given lots of it and still lots around. Oh, and Bill its called "LOCUST MANIA" Mainly isolated to Connecticut
I had retrieved a couple cherry logs over the Summer then found the huge BLlog that we went after and later milled them. Doing a drive by some of the logs (actually several) had mill potential, but him and i talked about it while working and none of them were "easy" to get.
Yeah ive made a few friends from the FHC. The footing was on the rough side, but nothing i havent worked in before. Almost the norm at a score for me. That and masses of prickers, vines and tangles, but thats the norm for BL.
One did roll and hit his tire luckily. After that we were more careful of the truck. One of my tail lights suffered blunt impact trauma a couple weeks ago when a split i was loading missed. Blue duct tape to the rescue.
I also lined up a row of logs at the bottom of the hill to stop any run away logs from rolling down and then split them last when done with the rest of the cutting.
Looks like you are having fun buckin that up. Lot of wood there that's relatively easy to get to! Man I need to get a trailer.
I love having a trailer , or two. Especially having a smaller truck. It cuts down on wear and tear of the truck , easier to load , holds more and gives me a little flexibility. Like yesterday; I had some things to do with the Mrs. yesterday after cutting so with the trailer I was able to just back it in the driveway and leave it there and not have to worry about unloading , that I will do this afternoon when I get home. Just makes my life easier.
