Looking for a bush hog for my new Kubota 3560. The tractor has 28 PTO hp, and is 70" wide across the back tires. Use will be maintaining fields, pastures, and paths. I don't plan on much reclamation work, if any.
My salesman, who I have a long term relationship with, tells me that a 6' cutter would be the best choice for me. I am worried about if I will have enough power for one that size. Not worried at all about 3 pt capacity, and the tractor handling it-it weighs 5700 pounds with the FEL on, and the lift capacity on the 3 pt is over a ton.
I did this work previously with a 54" cutter behind a B2620 with 19 PTO hp-no problems at all.
    Thoughts?

    Thanks.
    Will

I have a 5 foot on my 29 PTO HP and it doesn't feel it at all. I think I could do a 6 foot without an issue. I think your dealer is right. Even if you were reclaiming pastures I think you would be fine.

John Deere claims their MX6 can be run on as little as 25 PTO HP ...we have a MX6 on an old Case 470 (34 hp @ PTO) at work and it handles it fine...even in heavy growth.

It will handle it fine. We have the L3130, about 27 PTO hp with 5' mower, unless I'm cutting saplings or very heavy vines, no problem. I wish I had gotten 6' as the tractor is 66" wide and mower doesn't cut as good where tires went.

I run a 5' on my tractor, 28 hp on the pto, and it doesn't work hard at all, but I am not mowing thick stuff. 6' should be fine unless you get into some heavy cutting.

I ran a 5' on a tractor with 27 PTO with ease. I think the tractor would have handled 6' fine.

Thanks for input. Looks like it will be a 6' cutter. Unfortunately, they're not giving them away!!!

I would love to take you up on that offer, but I'm down by the Pa. border between Elmira and Binghamton.

6' will be right for you. There's always a lower gear thicker stuff, and actually the HP is second to travel speed in the tall heavy stuff. The blades just need to spend more time "chewing" no matter the HP.

    I run a 4ft on my bx2660, 19.5 hp at the pto. I don't think you'll have any issue running a 6ft with 28hp at the pto.

I've ran an old 7' pull type with a 25 hp kubota. Spun it fine but it would get pushed around on the hills.

I use a heavy built International brand 5’ brush hog behind my 17 PTO HP Yanmar. Tractor weighs about 3000lbs with FEL and hog on it. Runs it fine, just have to slow down in thick growth. The front axle can gets little light going up a steep hill.

Thanks for all the replies. I have no concerns about weight-the tractor with FEL on is around 5700 lbs, so I think I have plenty of ballast to handle hills, raising the cutter, etc. I guess it's time to drain the checkbook and bring one home!

Yep, it happens, you go look, pet it and it follows ya home. Funny how that happens.

I tried a 5' on my BX2360, 17.7PTOHP and it had plenty of power. It was just a little on wide side, with the BX being a narrow tractor. My neighbor tried it on his John Deere 1025r and it turned it fine also.
