I picked up this burl wood furniture today for the price of a broken back. It is pretty cool to a wood junkie like myself though. This stuff is heavy. Couch is about 400lbs. Chair ain't far behind. There are cushions for the back of each, but I figured you folks would be more interested in the wood than the upholstery, which is all brand new. It also came with a matching foot stool. My question is: what kind of wood is this. I've come up with either redwood, or possibly cherry. There is a lighter colored stripe in the back of the couch, but some nearly black stripes in the arm that is shown in the one close-up. I do ok with wood I'd, but this is much harder so I thought I'd check with the sawyers. What might this be worth? Happy to get closer shots of a particular area if anyone's interested.
I wouldn't have a clue on wood type but it sure an interesting conversation piece. I'd have to build an addition just to fit that furniture. Very nice pieces Pyro
I gave away a pretty new chair to my buddy that helped me carry them. No room for it. They were delivered, so I only had to carry them in, but damm, those were heavy for two of us. Feeling it for sure.
Most of the cherry burl ive seen on trees are about the size of a soccer ball. Not sure what it is. Pretty cool pieces.
Redwood Burl in large pieces can be pretty heavy even though the wood is quite soft. But with that color, root texture etc I'd guess those to be some kind of Juniper from the Rockies or southwest of there a bit.I do have some 50+ yr old gnarly Juniper shrubs next to front porch, somewhat similar twisted shape but no where near that size of course. Could be Manzanita, its very dense blood red wood, from Western US,but I don't know if it gets that big or not.Stunning stuff for turned bowls, sculpture & other art objects. It often will be found with sand, bits of pea gravel, other debris in amongst the roots etc.Makes it fun when roughing out some pieces......
Just how old would a juniper be to get this big? The chair back is 54" tall and 24" wide at its widest. Here's another good pic of the figuring.
Great and interesting furniture! I would imagine that furniture could be quite valuable to the right person.. Ray
