I've been eyeing this project for years. I'm sure way over thinking it...I know I was. I finally just started dropping some timber a month or so ago and with huge help from MikeInMa, his sidekick Bill and Mike's cart of tricks, we made some great progress today! Beautiful day.
Yessah FHCers, helping out FHCers. We got to use my new rope puller kit that I got from the tree stuff site. Worked as advertised. Glad to be able to assist and have tools to giterdun. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
Nice work, men! Perfect weather finally, cool sun, no bugs, before leaf-out. I saw a long -range forecast for May that said cooler than average.
I needed that helping hand from MikeInMa to get this project rolling. Spent a little more time late this afternoon getting another log on and prepping another for the trip
Getting there. Looks good. You'll be rolling your atv and trailer across it real soon. Be sure to get off and take a pic of your atv stopped on it, on the inaugural crossing Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
They tend to do that. If we are having lots of below average, that will most times be the forecast. If it is hot, hot will be forecast. It takes a lot of computers to come up with these forecasts....
Some nice straight white oak is being dedicated to that bridge. It should last for years and years. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
These guys were the lambs. Through their sacrifice I'll have access to a lot more like them and more. Plus they were what was standing there. I had some Swamp Maple laying across and considered keeping them as part of it, but like Mike says, the White Oak will be there for a while. And we did use the Maple to skid the oak into place.
I was able to get back at it late this afternoon. One more timber in place and one more to go. I did drop one of those but no pic to post. Tomorrow.
Last White Oak downed for effort. Got it down a launching spot and decided I'll wait to lay it in. I want to re-arrange the timbers to get The beefier ones along the wheel load. This last one will be one of those.
Once you have the last log in place, are you going to weave some wire/cord cross all logs, at each end, to keep them from spreading? Or, maybe a stout wooden spike at each corner would do it.
I have a spool the equivalent of 9 wire, except it's stainless steel. My thought is cinch them via come-a-long and then lace them with the wire and twist them tight. I still need to post the bundle perpendicular and parallel to keep the mat somewhat arrested. I plan to deck it with hemlock and on top of that lay a wheel path for wear.
View attachment 168217 Got some time outback this morning at the brook. Re-arranged a couple of timbers and then sent the last one home. Next I think I'll shim the timbers to get them to be as close to being on one plain as possible, the lash them together and then stake/anchor the mat somehow. If I only spoke mosquitoe, this would go a lot quicker.
