Awhile back I lamented in front of my co-workers that I had been unable to get my hands on any Locust for quite some time. One of them spoke up and told me he had a ton of Locust growing right in his backyard. Well..... I had to check this out. Turns out he has about a dozen of them, ranging from 10-12" all the way up to some 24"+ beasts. We started tackling them on Saturday, a half-dozen of them down, limbed, and bucked. I was able to get two loads out on Sat but Sun was too wet/warm here to think about getting a two-wheel drive truck on/off of his lawn. Going back during the week to get as much wood out as I can before it warms up midday!
Very nice MM After today i will be going down to the grove of Locust on the farm and will start a dragging
There's just something about dragging all those BTUs out that's real satisfying eh? Actually, I had a ton of help this weekend, on Sat my buddy helped me cut and drop 3 of these and haul out 2 loads. On Sun, another good friend and his son helped me drop and cut 3 more! On both days, the property owner (my coworker) helped keep the burn pile going and drag out the brush. Doesn't it?
Its nice to have someone dragging the brush for you. If they dont have much experience around a saw I always give them the "dont sneak up behind me as I maybe slinging the saw around" speech.
I still have some 2 year old stuff MM and was wondering what your plans are with the big scoop? You gonna split and burn next year or give it another year? I know it drys quick and the stuff i have couldnt get much dryer
Jealous here. Nice score and work. Did he just decide to cut the trees down? Or was it something he wanted down anyway?
He wants them ALL down. Yessir! We'll see, I have a TON of silver maple to process here, in addition to this locust. I have about 6 cord of Sandy oak that's already CSS so it will either be this or that, whichever is ready first. Also have about a cord of Black Cherry split but not stacked, yet. Oh yeah, and we're cutting oak on the golf course as fast as we can. It's going to be a challenge to get this stuff processed before it gets mighty hot!
Why hot dont worry about that. I cut all year long and split it too. Get some funny looks hauling truckloads of oak around in july/august but oh well. Most run around in sept to now cutting to burn this year.
You have way to much work MM, I'll be happy to help lighten your load and take some of that locust off your hands, just wrecks the chain on your saw anyway.
The neighbor said there was no way he wanted any of it. Cracks your stove ya know..... Right this way sir ......
Since you like processing in the heat, I nominate you to come up and split for me on days over 80 degrees.
We could work something out if I were closer. Not that I like it but heck from march through about october we get over 80s temperature , just learn to live with it.
Just so 'yall know, there probably will be a few more pictures of that loaded truck in this thread with yellow wood packed in it. Unfortunately, it has chosen to be winter here this week and that means I probably won't be able to get in/out of the yard with a 2WD truck. (Kinda tight and hilly)
I do to just not as a golf course guy. I own 2 boats , probably not going to use them much this summer with the infant. But I also own an old farm that I look after. There is maintenece on the house and there is grass to cut and fields to Bush hog.
