Had snow on the ground here in NE "The Peoples Republic of Illinois this morning when I let the dogs out to do their business and get an armful of pallet wood. I'm probably gonna use the rest of my pallet wood today, as the wind is howling here (gusts to 50+mph) with a temperature in the mid 30's. The house cools fast on days like today, and with me burning pallet wood, I need to keep an eye on the "little big stove". Small loads get hot fast with the draft this wind is causing. Not going nuclear, but when the wood lights...............it lights quick!!!!! Gotta be on the ball. So I figure sometime tonite I'll load up the crib on my deck with some 2yo silver maple; and then bank up the stove with that for the night. Almost November 1 and I'm just delving into my stash for the cold months.
No matter what, keep warm! That is why we do what we do. We're still putting wood from 2008-2009 in the stove and have the rack full on the porch. Just a couple steps away from the stove. And I'm sitting about 10' from the stove and enjoying the warmth.
Just started dipping into some of my maple here also. Been cold and windy here too, and the poplar wasn't quite doing the trick. Supposed to get snow Saturday, highs in the 40s next week. Might be time to start running her 24hr!
We'll be burning good for a while. Been snowing and the temperature falling. Windy but we're blessed with the woods on our north and a ridge too so north wind doesn't get us much.
We are now in 24/7 hour mode. Also supposed to get a dusting of snow tonight and tomorrow. Fire sure does feel good.
I hadn't loaded mine since last night at 10:30, just got home and she's crankin on some elm. It'll be 24/7 until at least Tuesday it looks like.
I started the IS at around 4 today. We don't have any of that cold weather some of you have already, I think saturday into sunday is our time for cold. Not quite ready for 24/7 yet.
Cold weather moving in thru the Great lakes region. Have some good stuff ready to burn, that's what it's for. Makes the whole wood process worth your while , eh? A good feeling !
The IS got her first real load of wood late today - about 2/3 full of white ash. Gettin' down to 25 tonight and windy. Now being hypnotized by a dark firebox with interludes of a gauzy yellow blue flame that lingers and moves like aurora borealis and then fades out. Everything is good.
Those ghost flames are so cool. When the glass is clean on my BKK-(not often)- I love watching them pop out of no-where when everything is cooking like it should.
It's been colder much sooner this year. The weather man may be right about the upcoming winter Temps have finally dropped where I need to light the 30-NC off tomorrow morning. Been burning the freestanding pellet stove upstairs when it gets cold, but tomorrow we will fire up the wood eater and test the pellet furnace to make sure all is operating correctly.
45 this morning but with the new house it takes a day or to to get the temps down. First real fire this morning and running a small load all day so far. House is at 72 down stairs with the stove and 68 on the main level. All on pine. Was a great Oct here no heat needed at all looks like that's coming to end this week with highs in the upper 40s.
I'm not stuffing the stove 24/7 yet but I haven't needed a match for a few days. Half to 3/4 loads and letting the coals burn down for a long time in between. But it's coming.
35° here, to be 28° tonight. 30% chance of snow. Warm spell , from what we've had, but more "the norm" for us this time of the year. Good firewood processing weather
I agree, I was chompin at the bit today to be out there but it rained off and on and pretty windy.....another day I guess.
