Here's how I keep an eye on what's happening with my boiler.

I bought the panel meters from ebay -- about $5 a piece. They come with temp probes that have about a 10' lead. For longer runs I was able to cut them and solder on some CAT 5 cable. I have runs that are about 50' and they read accurately.

My biggest problem was finding the right box that could fit all the meters that wasn't too big that I would bump into it. I settled on a structured media panel. I cut out the slots with a dremel tool, took a while since the box is metal. The box has a cut out for an outlet in the bottom right so the bottom row can only have two meters. I painted it grey with primer so it has the right 'industrial' look.

For power I used an old wall wart. Just make sure it outputs do voltage for the meters you have. I found some in my junk drawer that output 24 vac (from an old cordless phone)

How high can those probes go? possible handle flu temps? What do you have for storage tanks?

They only go up to 250 or so. For flue temps look for a type k thermocouple; good to 1250 or so

I have a couple 500 gallon propane tanks -- the second and third row on the panel shows the temps of the tanks top, middle and bottom.

Some time when I have enough cash, which will probably be never after next week, I should pay you to make me one of those panels for my boiler. Since, you know, you make them in the best color and all. (wood gun grey) :)

What type of VWs do you own?

Only water cooled VW, all gasoline, one turbo charged. One I built was 5 cylinder (sold last year).
