I had planned to build one of these for myself, but my sisters birthday is in a couple days so I decided to make one for her. The wood all came from her tree, after all. It was a pretty simple project, same design as my "scrap bins" - same lumber source too - my scrap bins. I used my new jointer to actually true up the frame components, and also to surface most of the slats; but I didn't bother with making them square.
I agree Shawn, I hoping to see a serious finger joints on the ends with the Fine Woodworking magazines in the photos. Just kidding. They look great. Actually come to think about that might be a pretty cool look.
I just gave it a 'quickie" finish and rubbed it down with some mineral oil. I like the look but I guess I don't know how it will hold up for the long run. But I figure it should be easily 'repairable'.
