I know, sounds stupid. But every BW pic I’ve seen showed darker heartwood. Maybe because it’s a fresh cut?
Friend asked me to keep an eye out for some large, free, highly valuable Black Walnut logs.
The big log looks pretty big. Is it really BW?

It could be, some BW will have a ligbter heart or it could be Butternut. I don't think all that wood came feom the same tree.

Yeah there’s some different wood in there for sure. Hmnn Butternut,,,cut some of that once. I remember it as green but memory is not my strong suit. I’ll compare bark pics to the living butternut still on the property. Thanks for the thoughts.

Every bw I’ve seen has much darker heartwood
That does not look like Black Walnut to me. It should be obvious why it’s a valuable lumber.

Agree, it’s advertised as free black walnut but I don’t think it is. These are the only two pics so I assume that even tho there’s other wood in there the main focus would be the BW.

Black walnut will definitely have dark heartwood, and sometimes purplish streaks that are prevalent when split. Also, are there walnuts on the ground around the tree? Dead giveaway. My yard is lousy with walnuts from my neighbor's BW tree.

Could be american elm, could be pignut hickory, heck could be basswood;) but no I dont think its black walnut.

    Here's pignut hickory

    pignuthickorysmall-origional-01.jpg

Truth is there are only around 6 people in the entire country that are worth a darn at accurately identifying species by just bark and end grain.

P.s. it's not basswood that's just a little inside joke.

Ive learned that walnut as a center pith thats "chambered". If you can, slice a cookie off, split so its visible and look for it. Learned that on here..thank you FHC! IMG_1977.JPG

One of those could indeed be elm. The other more likely pignut.
