I picked up some wood today. The person told me it was black maple? Anybody ever use this stuff before or is this something different?
Cant say ive ever cut or burned any maple that looks like that. Sugar, Norway, red (aka swamp) and silver are the maples im familiar with.
"The Guide" describes Black as "closely related to Sugar Maple." Should be great firewood, nice grab!
Was the tree dying? That might explain the dark heart. In the video billb3 posted, there's a hint of a darker hue, but nothing like your pic. Post some split pics when you can..
That is 100% without a doubt black Walnut..... Black maple looks like a cross between sugar and red maple (bark and wood), wood is harder than red maple....
I think it might be black walnut didn’t seem right after looking up black maple. Thanks for the help all. I’ll try to get some split and take a picture once it stops pouring rain here in 3 days....
That’s black walnut. That stuff is getting very rare. I got a half truckload of it a couple years ago. It’s been split and stacked since I got it. Can’t bring myself to burn it, due to its rarity in Colorado
Another vote for walnut. Black maple is very similar to sugar maple in appearance, although the leaves are three-lobed rather than five, and the bark is slightly darker.
