Got home today and started a fire. Mostly Pine and I think some really old Elm..Anyway..about 10 minutes into it I see Black Flakes landing on the snow in my front yard!!! Blowing out some real thin creosote from the top of the stack... Happens every now and then when its real cold out...Only 12F when I got home...:)

When i first owned my house i burned my Christmas tree limb by limb in the actual fireplace. I hadnt gotten an insert yet. Next day i find charred needles all over the back deck! :heidi: oops!!! Not one of the smartest things ive ever done!

I have to ask how does the insert get connected to the chimney pipe?I am asking as looking to build new house and make fireplace for a insert but I cannot figure out how to connect the insert to chimney.

You might want to ask your questions on the EPA stoves and fireplaces part of the thread. This involves a liner going from the insert through the chimney. Just had an insert installed...

Yes, you will need to install a liner from the insert stove, up through the existing chimney...and it is MUCH preferred that the liner have an insulation blanket/wrap on it...safer, cleaner, better draft/stove performance.

Id consider a napoleon nz3000 if building new.
    Not a "fireplace".:handshake:

    Open face fireplace Vs. Woodstove
