Spent the last two evenings piecing down a big honey locust........the thing that sucks is I AIN'T GETTING THE WOOD!!!

The first evening I took off the large limbs that were threatening the power lines.

Last evening we dropped the tricky limb that was hanging out towards the house. Ended up having a split in that limb and the very tip of it (twigs) clipped the gutter on the porch.......man that made me mad!! No damage, but the point is it happened....

After that, everything went smoothly........the trunk was around 24' long and around 22" diameter at breast height......a TON of primo firewood........

Look at the beautiful grain in the main trunk crotch.....I bet fishingpol or thistle would love to have that burlwood for a bowl!!

yes, it was hard for me to walk away from that wood!!! I've got four more to do at my leisure on a nearby farm......but its the point that I cut around a cord and a half ofthe premium hardwood and I had to walk away!!

Good job, Scott. Nice pics too. Shame you are not getting the wood. That Honey Locust looks about like mine except a little smaller. I've trimmed quite a bit off that tree, and saved it to burn. Lots of smaller branches always falling off it in the wind to supply kindling.

thanks Al! Thankfully is was a thornless tree. He ones on the farm have razor-sharp thorns, some of them over 8" long!!

Mine is thornless too. Wouldn't want thorns on a tree in the front yard.

Another great job Scott. It hurts not getting all that honey goodness. :( Love the color of that stuff, gives me a smile every time I see it. :).

Right where I want to be.
Is it normal that you buck up the wood too?
    Nice take down.

Yes, Dave.....I always buck up the wood unless they request otherwise. That way I can get a good clean-up on the jobsite......

I'm hoping this guys buddy backs out and doesn't want to deal with the wood......I'm crossing my fingers I get a phone call next week and him asking me to come and get the wood!!

Don't be worring about that pile Scotty. You have so much now it's gonna rot before you burn it all....Sav told me it would.

It wasn't too bad, only boo-boo was that one limb splitting uphill on me, which led to the tip of it hitting the gutter....no big deal though, the homeowner laughed it off as he had a guy with a backhoe in there a week ago working on some shrubs, the guy ripped the whole corner of the gutter off with the hoe!!

You should have seen the look on the guy's face when he found out that I was dropping the rest of the tree (sans the big branches off to the sides) whole.....I told him "you think that branch hitting your gutter was something, wait til this whole tree is laying in your living room here in a couple minutes!"

We dropped that trunk and the straight stem out of it perfectly in the front yard (with a cable on the truck as insurance).

I had a 90' locust cut last year before it came down by itself. Cost me six hamburgers, a 12 pack and the wood. Gorgeous stuff… hard as hell.
