My BIL is building a house so needless to say when he asked if I wanted some of the wood from the lot clearing I jumped on it. Got out today to attack some of it.
Here is the pile before hand

Really wish I had the keys to the backhoe
    IMG_20171203_132229.jpg
Was getting into the pile and was curious what kind of wood everyone thought this could be

Needless to say I did not get the whole pile cut but a healthy amount for 3 hours

Do you have any leaf pics?
The wood with the dark center has me wondering what it is. The other wood appears to be red oak.

Regardless, it looks like a great score. Nice straight logs, and you'll get a lot of nice stacks out of that.

I was thinking that. But I've never seen them with such a wide light outer area. Then again, I don't cut much black walnut.

That split was from further up the trunk where it thinned out

Now I'm upset I bucked up some good walnut. Could have slabbed it out

There's probably more in that pile. As walnut trees go, where's there's one, there's usually more.

Fwiw, it's ok firewood. Not great. Good shoulder season stuff. Makes a lot of ash imo.

Yes, it makes a lot of ash, and is around 16 mbtu's a cord. So not so great, btu wise, but it's btu's. The way winters have been around most of the states, shoulder season is longer and longer.

I see quite a bit of ash and/or poplar in there too.

Any free BTU'S is always good in my book. Just separate out the walnut when your stacking it and then use it for shoulder season. I try to keep all my wood stacked that way.

Can't go wrong with a deal like that. Not to mention it looks easy to get to.

Backed the trailer right up to the pile and started cutting, doesn't get easier!

You could always buy a lathe for that walnut.

X2, nice score. The walnut would be great to turn with after a few years in the round dried up and checked.

Yep walnut, I think it is higher than 16mbtu's though. More in the range of 19-20mbtu's. It does produce a lot of light fluffy ash, but dries out quick if stacked in a good spot.
