I may or may not have posted before about my need to remove a large silver maple in my yard. Shading the garden, threatening my shed, and found out last week that roots had spread far enough that it was causing problems with my septic leach field. Was way too big and out of my skill level to take down myself, so I hired a father-son team locally to take it out. Took them about 5 hours total, pieced it down branch and chunk at a time, all roped and rigged. Very professional and skilled. The photos are of my saws, I made the final cut on the stump to take the last piece off. 24" bar on the larger saw. I probably will get two cords out of this, it was one main stem, forked about 20' up into two 24" stems, and then one forked again about 40' up into a trio of 16" stems. I cut a 20" stem off about three years ago so it was even bigger at one point. A couple tiny sections with rot but surprisingly no rot at the stump. Silver maple is not my favorite but it finishes off my wood supply for the year. I will be renting a stump grinder to take out this and probably 30 more stumps around my property.
Nice. I have a huge one too and would hate to loose its shade. Looks like you have plenty more to do that job. Silver isn't great farwood in my experience but it'll burn for sure. Glad they got it down with no damages to speak of.
Jeeze that things big... I would have probably hired that one out too especially if it could hit something or it has some rot that may cause an unforseen issue. I took out a big red maple a while ago and have been burning the wood this spring, not bad to burn but you can go through it pretty quickly especially if it's a little spalted.
That'll make a bunch of firewood. Lower btu, but dries fast & makes good shoulder wood. I'll take it when it's around.
Biggun! Sometimes it pays to let the pros do it. I have a big one that the pros took down. Right on the side of the road and a garage on the other side. I wouldn’t take the chance of dropping it whole. Besides, they chip up all the mess and just leave the firewood. Gotta luv it.
