Very interesting. I have tried to tell my wife this is why I drink beer. So I don't stop getting thirsty. It actually does not quench your thirst. It makes you want more. So I never stop getting thirsty. :D

I'd like to know about the 15,000 meter mountain thing, doesn't make sense to me. I'll have to google it sometime.

We did a simple experiment in physics class YEARS ago, stacking round steel cylinders on top of each other. They could only be stacked so high before the stack would tumble, do to rotation of the Earth...
Perhaps the same thing is occurring with mountains?

I think I remeber reading this a while back. Don't quote me on this but the force required to push the mass higher would result in melting the rock on the bottom...basically we don't have rock strong enough to go that high.

I think we may have a winner...first Google answer FWIW

A big reason for that limit though is that mountains, because of the principle of isostasy, are required to have roots that displace an equal mass below the surface. When mountains get that high and roots go that deep the minerals at the bottoms of the roots undergo phase changes and you get the rock eclogite. Eclogite is denser than the mantle so it no longer provides buoyancy to the mountain on top, and it is thought that it probably drops off the bottom of the root and sinks into the mantle.
