I'm going to be helping my cousin install a drolet insert in the next few weeks and wondering what is the best/easiest thing for pouring down to insulate? Mica? Roxul? The next thing is where is the best place to get it.... Thanks for any help in advance

I stuffed the throat with Roxel after the liner had been pulled.

was this loose or did you have to shred it off of a batt?

It was batts and I cut & pulled what I needed to stuff up there. I stuffed as much as I could until it was snug and tight all around the area, especially around the liner. I also put a block plate in with roxel on the opposite side. Can't really see it that well in this pick but I basically flipped the block plate and cut a batt of roxel to match the size of the block plate minus the hole for the liner.

    What liner size? 6"?
How tall was you your chimney?

I was gonna suggest either Perlite or Vermiculite.... don’t know the cost difference.
Stuff the bottom with some Roxel/rock wool, calculate the volume of his stack minus the liner and buy accordingly.

Only had room for a un-insulated liner? Curious.

I know most chimney pros refuse to do loose fill...for several reasons.
The biggest one is that there is almost no way to make sure you have proper CTC (clearance to combustibles) because the liner will not hang totally straight and in the center of the flue...and very few chimneys actually have proper CTC believe it or not...the biggest problem is on most chimneys it is near impossible to verify if it is built proper or not.
Also, it can be hard to keep loose fill from running out any little crack.
And if you ever try to do any work on anything, the loose fill will come running out and make a GIANT mess!

And here is a good example of what happens when you give vermiculite a place to "leak" to...Outdoor Wood Boiler Plan & Install (5th pic down)
