First off, thanks to Ernie G for selling me these 2 bars last week :handshake: I noticed he had them in the classifieds for months with no takers, so I decided to see what I could do with them. These 20” bars were the D007 mount style, off of Poulan saws. I was hoping to run them on my Husqvarna 61, which has a D009 mount. From my research, the oil holes line up and the chain adjuster holes work (albeit they’re larger) The biggest difference is the slot size for the studs. On a D007 it’s 0.5mm (0.020”) wider. Not being one to just run it that way, I milled out the slots oversize and added a slotted step. Then I made inserts that were a light press fit into the bars. That’ll solve the slop issue. While I was at it, I re-dressed the rails, and figured these were the perfect guinea pigs to try my new homemade rail closer tool on, which will probably be later this week. The last thing I’m going to do before running them is to strip them completely and give them to a buddy to powder coat them. Might as well give them some kind of aesthetic appeal.
    The bars as advertised:

    Very nice Eric!
I once borrowed a local forum guys homemade rail closer. Didn’t work for me. Be interesting to see if you get good results. I have a 37” Windsor Speedtip bar with a V’d groove. Rails won’t budge.

I know if the bearings ride too low, they’ll be pinching on the solid part of the bar and you can crank up the tension all you want but the gap won’t close. I didn’t have any thinner bearings on hand so I put a taper on the outer race of these ones, so it should only pinch the rail section. We’ll see… I fixed the rails on the 18” bar I had for this saw using a narrow vise and just kept doing one section at a time, but it was tedious and time consuming.

Upon recommendation, I put a thin piece of sheet stock in the groove and beat rails w/ a hammer. No dice, nothing worked. Hope to someday find someone with a groove grinder, I'd have my son put some weld in there and then re-grind. Know anyone w/ a Barshop?

The Chainsaw Guy's shop can probably fix it. Shipping may be offensive though.

Yep. I know Shaun Carr can do it, but I don’t wanna spend more than it’s worth on shipping both ways. Need someone kinda local.
I think I heard the chainsaw guy passed away?

Nah he's still going. He puts out videos under WestCoastMuscleSaws now. I have to laugh...you can tell he misses the shop. He 'retired'. I basically cut my teeth on chainsaw knowledge by watching Rich's videos over the years. So much good information contained. I realize many of those videos were actually advertisements to sell second hand saws, but some of the videos have near priceless mechanical/anecdotal information to them. He also has the absolute coolest shop tools.

I always thought it would make more sense to have a bar with removable rails. Once they get clapped out, replace them and not the entire bar, and no fiddling around with trying to close up the groove width. 3/16” long #8 or #10 flat head screws would work to secure them.

A little update. My coworker is finally getting around to powder coating these bars for me. One is obviously going to be black and the other one with the funky swirls got clear coated. Can’t wait to run them!

That's neat. Do you expect them to last longer than a regular painted finish?

That’s the hope anyway. The bond is supposed to be stronger than regular paint so we’ll see how it holds up.

Keep the chain really sharp and it should keep the bar temp low enough to last a good bit longer than prying up on a dull chain and making the rails screaming hot. The clear coat on my Sugi’s is still there for the most part and I’ve been using them for years.
