Bad Day for Pull Ropes.

Broke the pull rope on the 241 while at my cut yesterday. Got to storage and went to fire up the splitter and that broke too! Of course it was on a Monday!. Any recommendations as far as quality? Will OPE generic rope suffice for both?

 

Yes but in my experience so far the actual Stihl branded ropes last longer. It’s actually German made starter rope, I know the 241 is small but I’d spend the 15$ or so and buy the elasto-start for it .

 

Is that the rubber thingy under the actual plastic grip?

 

Would an OPE Stihl dealer have this in stock?

 

Some do now I carry them for the tree service saws but they carry them at the local shop. First rope i changed on one 500i had 7,000 pulls on it and same saw got a whole new rewind and rope assembly at just over 15,000 pulls.

 

Yes, the shock absorber is molded into thr handle and comes as one assembly

 

I just checked the handle and its not the elasto start but does have a partial white rubber that does come out when rope pulled. Ill check with a local dealer today and bring the handle with me as I'll be using the 241 a lot more than my other saws and I HATE fixing stuff. So I should ask for the elasto start assembly?

If they have it, some of the smaller saws had slightly different set up than others but this one for the 201/251 would definitely work it’s more about needing the smaller rope for the smaller starter pulley. Sometimes they sell a replacement rope assembly for a the handle on smaller saws but the larger ones I just buy the handle and all and install it. Think last ones I bought were about 18$, bought 5 and have 3 left. They are nice because they take some of the shock up when pulling the saw over it’s especially nice on the big saws like the 066 ect.

My 400, 462, 500 have the elastostart so I am familiar with it.

 

or this part number, not sure if your saw has 3mm or 3.5 mm rope.

I usually buy a bit "extra" if I'm buying rope off a roll (by the foot) because I have a long wingspan and hate to find the end of the rope when pulling hard/often (usually not a Stihl problem)
Some machines have room for a lil extra rope, some don't (at least not very much)

 

Elastostart all the way! I even put them on my Huskys. Man, someone upstairs really didn't want you working on Monday.

 

I read somewhere once that this stuff is basically unbreakable. Obviously different sizes are available.

 

Will Fiskars send you new ones?

I think I got the same stuff. First dealer didn't have the elastostart assembly in stock and neither did the second. I opted to get cord for both and what they sold me looks just like yours. I honestly didn't look at the brand when he cut it.

 

Should be able to just reknot that splitter rope that's what I did when mine broke like that.

 

I may jinx myself but... How am I the only person to never have any trouble with my starter ropes? I worked on small engines for three years at one time and never once broke a rope, but I repaired a whole bunch of them that customers brought in. I still don't know how you can pull a rope in two trying to start a gx190 but I can put a rope on one in about 45 seconds. The last saw rope I broke was probably 20 years ago. My 1998 husky stihl has the original in it far as I remember. I don't know what I'm doing right, but it must be something. Is everyone else taking super vitamins or something?

 

The days are numbered for the rope on my 262xp. I can see it is frayed and old. Same goes for the 272xp. Debris, weather, design, wear and tear eventually get them.

 

The saw in my avatar is showing a little wear on the rope. It's the original from 2014 on there. I keep 4' lengths of 'small' and 'large' in my saw box. Will keep tugging on it until it splits or gives up the ghost completely. Integrity is not in question yet.

I have seen 9hp hondas with 1/16 GAC used as rope. Oilfield guys. I wonder if they turn their ignitions harder in their trucks if they don't want to start?
