Got a bunch of snow on the roof and ice dams getting worse. Just ordered this bad boy and can't wait until it gets here because I don't like sliding around on the roof with a shovel. http://avalanche-snow.com/
Paid for 2nd day air shipping so it should be here on Monday. Were going to be below zero every night until Tuesday so there shouldn't be much melting going on and adding to the ice dams.
I know a few people that have them and they say it works just like the video shows. Much less work than shoveling but you need to stand back a bit so the avalanche isn't on your head.
I have a 12 pitch roof in most places, and I was fortunate not to have any serious buildup of snow in any of the valleys or drift edges. I did have to shovel 4 ft of snow off my flat roof the other day. All I need is some rain or another foot of snow to make things worse. I have one of the typical snow rakes and have lent it out to 2 people so far. Not a good year for ice dams and snow pack on the roofs
Yup, we've got folks all over the state with massive ice dams on their eves too. Roof rakes are popular for sure. I found one of the telescoping handle roof rakes at our local hardware. Has a plastic head rather than aluminum. I'd always used the ones where the handle bolts together. I was sure this newer rig wouldn't survive, but have really liked it over the last 3 winters. Easier to change length in tight areas on our deck and the plastic head isn't quite as hard on the shingles.
I know what you mean, I think I have the same one as your describing. It has a telescoping handle with a plastic rake on it. And like you said you can quickly change the handle length in areas you don't want the butt end hitting something behind you. Only downside is my rake only goes out 3 sections, maybe 21' ft at best.
The old farm's roof on the main house was really high. I discovered I could handle 5 lengths of the older bolt together handle (had 2 rakes). I didn't look forward to it every storm for sure, but reeeelly didn't want the ice either. So.... lotsa rakin'.
Well, it showed up today. It does a good job and way less effort than a regular roof rake or shoveling. I did about 1/3 of the roof in 20 to 25 minutes and ran out of steam. 2 to 2 1/2 feet of packed snow turned into quite a workout. Still had to shovel up what came off the roof into the walk paths and onto the deck so I can carry in firewood after dinner. This rake is worth every penny of the price.
You might get lucky and find it at one of their local retailers. I called all of them around here before ordering direct and was told that they had many on the way to the stores.
Made one from stuff I had lying around. The green pusher shovel had a tiny crack in it - wasn't gonna last as a shovel, but it does alright pulling snow. I could have tapered the plywood gusset to shed a tiny bit of weight but I figured it might fall apart so rev1 isn't pretty. I think the lathe is 12 feet long. My house wasn't too bad with some ice dam over the eaves. Mom's house ( even though it had fewer icicles than mine ) was pretty bad. And she has 4 or 5 more times as much attic insulation as me.
