The four truckloads of wood ive scored this week (not counting Sundays score) have been from roadside cutting by Asplundh tree service close to me. They are cutting back from wires. Three loads red maple, two partial loads of red oak. See my prior threads for more info. They cut more trees up the street from the wood i scored. Three houses with red oak and a fourth with sugar maple. If any ill grab the maple. I done feel like messing with the oak. May have a busy week and away til late Monday. Four separate yards. They were cutting in another which looked like poplar, but it was behind some shrubs. Few others looked as though people were keeping the wood. Ill keep you posted.
Looks like they are just cutting and dropping it "wherever". Can't go wrong following those fellas around. Nice!
Probably took close to a hundred years for those trees to grow as such. I wonder why it just now dawned on them to trim (fell) them! Can you just take wood like this if it's on a right of way? I assume on somebody's lawn, you need to ask?
I've been relying on the power line maintenance contractors for PG&E for my wood for several years. They're getting REALLY aggressive since the Paradise fire. Unfortunately, as part of the same fire preparedness frenzy, Caltrans is having the entire highway right-of-way commercially logged. Anything they cut that isn't merchantable timber is being chipped for co-gen. That is, except for the oak, which is being set aside for employees of the logging company. There goes my other supply. It's a good thing I'm almost 4 years ahead.
I think one should Always ask unless you're SURE. GIS property line website software helps to identify property without a house obviously attached to it. Imagine Asplundh felling a couple trees on your land, and coming home to find somebody cutting on it! That's a big fight imo, regardless of the technical ROW. Two exceptions in my opinion: First, if it's a tree in town and stacked up where town residents put their garbage, obviously untouched for a few days between curb and sidewalk. Also, I know it's not exactly legal in some states, but if it's on public property of any kind I'm on it - I pay plenty of taxes, so I figure the land is partially mine anyway. -edit- Brad, you're ridiculous. I love it. If I ever have a hard enough time finding wood I'm going to rent a tri-axle for a day and cruise through CT.
Good on ya again Buzz. The Red Maple is a breeze to work with and I like the way it burns slowly in the T5.
I will usually knock and ask. The four loads i got i did get permission. I confirmed tonight i can take the maple. I made sign and left it there...rental property and tenant didnt care. Maybe get it later this week. One oak was accounted for (mostly cut and some removed plus a sign). The other there was no answer when i knocked on the door. I was away for a couple days.
I was just camping for a couple days in Eastern central Connecticut and you should see the recently cut wood i saw. Lots of white and red oak. Even in our campground! This was on on of the campsites. Pic from today. If wood is on property side of sidewalk i will ask. If its between sidewalk and road its a free for all. If a "keeping wood" sign i dont touch. The four P/U fulls i got last week i asked everyone for permission to take wood as well as cut. One said no saw which i obliged. Most "inner city" wood in urban areas is a free for all. Not fond of city trees, but sometimes decent sugar maple. If you happen to come down BigPapi just stay out of New Haven county. I have dibs on most of the wood already!
I prefer the red oak, but have a lot of it and the trees are hastily cut and a lot of work yo cut some. Maple was smaller and easier, although a bit tougher to split with the Fiskars.
