I'm thinking about getting one. Any favorites? Any to avoid? For example- https://www.homedepot.com/p/Snow-Jo...EW8UuUNfQe8UHtgaFc8aAvenEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
I use my shop vac with hepa bag filter and a cannister filter for cold ash and chimney cleaning. Easy ash disposal with the bag.
Yup, same thing, cold stove, 6.5G shop vac...we call it "Mega Maid". The bag filter works for chimney clean out too. We don't use mega maid much, so will leave the slightly filled bag with ash in it for next wood stove/chimney cleaning. The bag filter thingy comes right out tho...in case we need it as a wet vac in the mean time. (Chimney a few days ago and stove today). Have not had reason to use it in heating season, so no worries about hot coals going up the tube. Sca
campinspecter bought this one and we used it for years. He found it plugs easy with clinkers from the base of the boiler. You can vacuum hot ash with it though. Cheetah II Ash Vac | Model MU305 | eVacuumStore.com
Thanks! I wasn't planning to clean hot ashes or coals. Just want to use it around the stove and hearth.
I don't expose my vac to hot embers. I use a 6 gallon craftsman wet/dry vac with the yellow bags. Works good at controlling the dust.
I too use a shop vac, but 4.5 gallon for ashes around the hearth, and the wide hose picks up bark too. Piece of advice, do NOT use your wife's new Shark Rocket household vacuum and let her wonder why the filters needs full cleaning and drying every other time she uses it PS, I also use the shop vac for the inside of my pellet stove, and on one occasion had to take a smoking vac out on the patio and pull a smoldering bag out.
I like my Craftsman ash vac that I got from Aubuchon's a couple of years ago. Before that I had a Power Smith - it lasted just over a year and the motor burned out (warrantee is a year). Even when it worked, I was underwhelmed by it's sucking ability. Although I hear good things about their customer service, there were a lot of complaints about that motor so I didn't even bother contacting them when the motor went. Before I got an ash vac at all, I used one of my small craftsman wet/dry vacs - also used it between the Power Smith and the Craftsman ash vac. It worked fine.
We do too. We raised the wood stove so we could sweep under it. So far though, for overhauling the stove (redoing the cement inside, checking for damage or wear in trouble spots noted before install) the dust pan didn't hack it. Sca
