Finding tons of these squirmy monsters this morning in a load of locust. Wondering what they are and if I'm endangering my own woods having them here. Been pulling all i can and stripping bark when I can too.
First pic is a flat head wood borer They are pretty common in dead oak The powder is from post Noticed some this morning on one of my logs None of it is a concern to my living trees
Locust is usually full of something or other. I’ve noticed when I’m done splitting locust a small flock of sparrows will be waiting for me to leave.
HL ends up looking like swiss cheese with all the critters chewing it up while it dries! Almost not worth the trouble IMO!
I bet i pulled over a 100 of them worms out. Still split and stacked a face cord. I'm curious if black locust houses critters as well as honey locust does.
That they do. I've had those splits in a pickup bed trailer for and few months and there is a good inch or two of saw dust covering the bottom.
Looks like hickory bores to me. They make a mess of honey locust. Only bugs I’ve seen in BL is some carpenter ants.
Ive only found critters in living BL. Ants somewhat common. An occasional borer, but nothing seems to touch it once split stacked. I have one stack of HL thats two years old. I haven checked that for critters. I noticed the HL splits from my recent score have something already feasting on it. Most wood will have some type of borer under the bark if left out for a few months. Protected from the elements they seem to leave it alone.
