Hey all, so i took down a small tree today for a friend. App says ash, but it feels a little different. Maybe bc I don't have a lot of live ash left in my area. Or is this something else? No leaves around. 20250227_124234.jpg 20250227_124239.jpg 20250227_124234.jpg 20250227_124239.jpg 20250227_124247.jpg

You are right, that's not Ash...I'm not sure what it is, but not Ash.

If'n it smells like root beer, then it's Sassafras.

Update, the landowner sent me pics of some dried up leaves. Almost looks like willow? Definitely not a conifer, this was a standing trunk topped but definitely not pine, spruce, cedar etc IMG_20250227_174325.jpg

Not saying it's not but the last sass i had that was that size had greenish colored wood. Kinda like tulip poplar.

Deep cut, that's the tree ID equivalent of playing songs by Greg Brown on the jukebox! It sounds like this guy wants me to take down 5 more of these, I'll take better pics and investigate more next time. And will have some live leaves to go off of!

Some of the bark has an ashy look to it, but I don't see any EAB damage under the bark I your pics.. Did you see any CutSplitStack? Also look for a small upper case "D" shaped entrance holes in the bark left by the EAB.

No, that's part of what makes me second guess it. Zero EAB damage and we have a ton of it by us now. Also the wood feels more like that heavy, waterlogged, wet poplar or cottonwood feel. But I don't think it's either of those. In trunk form it almost looked like black locust to me but once I bucked it I no longer think so
