So Horkn mentioned cosmic apples at Adams GTG. He got me hooked on them! If you like apples and see them you should try them.

He also got me looking at gun booster pumps but that's another story......

Do you mean Cosmic Crisp Apples?

    Yep, they’re Yummy

The Cosmic Crisp Apples were developed as a hybrid of Honey Crisp and Enterprise variety apples, by the University of Washington, at their extension center in Wenatchee, WA

Wenatchee is one of our Favorite places, I have worked there many times, and Leavenworth, WA is only about 20 minutes away. Wenatchee/Leavenworth has been a New Year’s Eve tradition for the Wife and I for many years

Just curious, what is the price in your area?

I haven’t priced them lately, but they are usually less than $2.00/# depending on the season. In season, they are usually around $1.39/#, and sometimes on sale as low as .99/#

We have them in my area. I've tried them a couple of times. I don't remember why I wasn't enamored of them, but they are on my list of apples not to buy any more.

I have quite the list of things that will turn me off an apple: I don't like "softer apples" or those that have a texture that is slightly "off", nor do I like overly sweet ones (my definition of overly sweet may be different than other's). Bruising too easily or not storing well is not to my liking either.

cosmic crisps are usually $1.99/lb here. Every now and then $1.49. Crunchy, juicy, tart and sweet.
Gala apples have been $.99/lb for 5 years, maybe longer, at Market Basket, but this year the ones that have been in storage from New York haven't all stored well and too many are soft and brown inside. They were my go to apple for many years.
    I've been favoring Empire lately.
I eat an apple a day. Lunch treat.
I only like Macintosh fresh off the tree.

I like honeycrisp because I can get them bigger than a softball and I gotta have crunch. The best I've tried is another variety of called Pixie Crisp. Never see them for sale anymore though. I have for sure eaten more Grannies than any other and no other goes better with peanut butter IMO.

I like Gala’s too, it just depends on what the prices are, same price, I will usually choose Cosmic Crisps, but the appearance will also be a deciding factor

The wiki article on Cosmic Crisps says that they will store well up to 10 months, so they are available year round. The Cosmic Crisps were also cross bred to not discolor after slicing, which I can attest to, I am often on 3-4 day runs, and the Wife will pack me Sandwich’s, sliced apples and boiled eggs for my trips. Sliced, bagged in ziplocks and kept in a cooler, and the Cosmic Crisps hold up well for 4 days.

I haven’t had any issues with them getting brown or soft inside.

For years, the classic Red Delicious, was my favorite, but over the years, they evidently have tried cross cultivating those as well, and the flavor is rather bland, and nothing like what they used to be, what a Shame.

Oh yeah cosmic crisp apples. They are great. My go to apples. Around here, they are usually less per lb than honey crisp.

Honey crisp are good, usually. Sometimes they can be mealy, and then they suck. I've yet to have a bag cosmic crisp. I've been eating them for 2 years and still have not had a mealy one

We live about 300 miles from the orchards and packing houses, plus work and recreate near there as well, so the Cosmic Crisps are abundant and inexpensive (comparatively) for us

I’m not sure what bogie found less appealing about them, unless they are too sweet for her taste, pretty much everything else she mentioned would indicate that she would like them, I would say that just means there are more for Me, but that usually isn’t a problem around here

It is a pretty interesting story, the development started in 1997, with the first plantings for commercial production in the spring of 2017, and the first apples were delivered to a QFC store in the Seattle area Dec 1, 2019

There was quite a promotion for them when they came out, and were around $5.00/#, but they were so popular, that over 13 Million trees have been planted, and the supply is strong enough that the prices have become much more affordable

WSU originally expected/planned for an initial release of 300,000 trees, and by 2014 had pre-orders for 12 Million trees, the initial supply of trees was allocated by a lottery

Yeah, these might just be too sweet for her. All the other things this type of apple was designed to not have issues with.

It could either be too sweet, or she also mentioned that the texture is something else that she is sensitive about

I don’t find either to be an issue, but I don’t like Mushrooms, Broccoli, or Pineapple ON Pizza( that should be a Federal Felony) but plenty of people, Strangely LIKE those things

Yep, but either you have Gorilla size hands, or that’s a pretty small Cosmic Crisp, they aren’t normally the size of Honey Crisps, but that does appear to be on the smaller size

It's a mixture of both. Although that's a smaller cosmic crisp.
