A guy a couple miles down the road took down a 2 big catalpas and I talked to him and he said I could cut them up and have the wood is it worth it? It's a lot of wood but also a lot of work. But it is free. So what do you think?

Yeah, only a few years ago I burned exclusively catalpa for 1 season. That's what that "mixed hardwood" load was. It burns fast. Not a lot of btu's, but for shoulder wood it's fine.

Yes, it is not oak but it still burns and good for spring and fall for sure.

I guess I'll pound them out then. What the heck. Im still grinding away on my cutoffs but this will be a nice change of pace. Might as well.

Catalpa used to be considered an up and coming wood in the lumber industry. I am curious what quality of smoke it would produce on the grill.

I enjoy having variety in my stacks; like you, I have lots of oak in my stacks, so having some lower btu wood is a nice change from time to time. I'd go for the catalpa and keep on stacking those cutoffs; did you ever get the hard maple cutoffs?

No hard maple yet. I drive by everyday to check but no dice as of yesterday!

I'm not thinking you will like it much for grilling, but maybe.

You never know. We will be doing the first shaping this fall and I will then find out.

I think it wouldn't be good for smoking use at all. It doesn't smell good, kinda like box elder. JM2ยข from burning 2 cords of it a few years back.
