The days are getting cooler. The nights are hovering just over freezing here in mid August. I’ve got both wood stoves loaded with shoulder season junk. The chimneys are freshly cleaned. All I have the do is toss a match in. Anyone else loaded and ready to light up?
Tonight is the first time in a couple months we are sleeping with windows open. I haven’t run a saw in a couple months either. I have a few empty IBC totes I am ready.
Definitely ready, but a long ways from burn season here in southern Kansas. We are in the upper 60’s tonight for the first time since early may, but burn season still a ways off unless we have an unusually early fall. Been too hot to get on the roof and clean the chimney, but looks like this weekend will be pretty nice, so will get it done then. Sick and tired of hundred degree weather and ready for some overnights in the teens. And no I’m not being a pervert with that last comment. Lol
Any day the heat and AC are both off, is a good day. I hope we are still several weeks from lighting the wood stove. Sure, I'm ready.
Ready here. But I want to hold off lighting it as far into the autumn as I can, to save firewood. Energy prices are going mad over here, and it's good to have this source of heat as a cheaper back-up.
Today's forecast is calling for highs in the low 70s, which hasn't happened since sometime in June. All that's left to do before I light my stove is to get up on my roof and clean the chimney, which typically I do in late September. I'm almost ready mentally, but there are still plenty more summertime things to do between now and burning season.
Ready... but will wait until we're in the 30s-40s around here. The new blown insulation, up above, is helping a lot... both with cooling and heating. If I light up too early in the season (stove is a cellar dweller, right below the bedrms) it gets way too warm to sleep. Used to be, I counted on that... not any more...
Far from ready. The wood shed will need to be filled up later this fall, and the chimney will need a good cleaning. Hard to think of lighting up the stove when we're still running our AC units on the nightly. Yesterday evening was just cool enough to do a little bit of bucking on my latest scrounge, and that's the first time I've run a saw since the spring.
I almost lit a small fire several days ago but held off. I did put some wood in the barn yesterday and will do more today. I'll get it done early this year.
Although I’ve had enough of summer temperatures, I am FAR from ready. The only thing I’m good on is having enough dry wood for the season. Need to sweep the chimney and do some stove repair and maintenance. I usually try to hold off until Halloween. To many projects going on….
I wish it was cold enough to be thinking about heating, but I doubt we'll need a fire for months yet. Last year we didn't get down to freezing temps at night until late October, we ran the AC all day on Christmas and New years both! Winter here is only cold if someone is from Florida, summer on the other hand is horrible long and hot! Last night it got down to 65, the lowest temp since May probably, and the first night in as long that the AC was off.
Let's see, 3–4-year seasoned wood in backyard, check Chimney cleaned, nope. Stove/cat cleaned, nope. Need to get busy filling the backyard as I only have enough for this season and maybe half of next year. Do have 5-year seasoned locust at Lefty's (2.5-3 cords) but not easy to get to. Will need to start bringing in some split loads to re-fill my stash.
Mentally ready, but still need to dig trench, lay in the lines and pour a pad then hook up with the OWB at the new house. Wood wise I'm set for 4+ years and adding to it.
I haven't even thought about a fire. Going to be 106 today and last night it only got down to 82. I miss living in the higher elevations.
I have still need to clean the stove. I have made two trips so far to the mountains for my lodgepole and need to make one more. After that I will be good to go. Plenty of time still. I will not be burning until october.
I will have to move firewood into the wood room in the basement. It holds almost 5 cords. I also will put some firewood on the basement patio (concrete) so it is within reach right out the door. Thats what is used for the NC-30 which sadly, I lit less than a dozen times last winter. 99 just asked yesterday if it is too early to start moving firewood in; I'm holding off until Sep/Oct. But! I do have enough leftover firewood in the wood room in case of a cod snap that I can light the furnace or wood stove for a couple of days.
I’ve been ready for a while. I needed real estate for fresh splits so I packed my basement early. We’re a long ways off though.
I cleaned the chimney last saturday. I need to order gasket material for the CAT. I need to move some seasoned oak to the shed as it's only have 1/4 full. I also will set up skids on the patio to hold 1 cord. Once I have my first fire, that cord normally will get me close to middle of December. I won't do that set up until after labor day. So no. Im ready regarding having well seasoned wood on hand but far from the rest.
